So much of the American whiskey business is shrouded in secrecy. There are a million brands and yet only a handful of actual distillers, not to mention bottlers and distributors, and it's all very confusing trying to determine where the heck what you're slurping came from.

An attempt to provide some transparency around this has been undertaken and provides a near complete list of both distillers and bottlers (which is continually updated):

Chuck Cowdery also summarizes some of the limitations (of which there are few) of this list, the biggest one (at least for me) being that, of the non-distillers, we still don't always know who distilled their product. But I think it's a great resource and hopefully a step towards greater transparency for consumers.

Thanks, Nab, for posting this list. It really is interesting because there seems to be a great deal of intentional secrecy involved in who's making what for who. On one level I can understand it because proprietary information is just that. But something about the secrecy here suggests a more historical dynamic that may never be fully unravelled. In any event, I don't feel quite so bad now about not being able to identify where certain whiskeys come from since folks who make it their primary purpose in life can't always do it, either.
