Does anyone remember what year the late, great Augenblick bar (on Damen, near the Irving-Lincoln-Damen intersection) closed? The wife and I showed up on one of the last nights to say our goodbyes, but now can't remember what year that would have been.

The memory lapse, no doubt, caused by too many nights at Augenblick.

Sigh...in June of 1999 they lost their lease. Soon thereafter I, too, left North Center, having moved there in no small part due to the proximity of my favorite bar. Alas!

Having lived at two different locations within walking distance, I was also saddened by their closing. The neighborhood was definitely the worse for it. I tried hard, but was never able to find a local replacement.

Anyone else recall the last night blow-out, when they were giving away drinks? What a wild night. I lived a block from the Augenblick for 4 years. Good times. Also, I remember they had a $1 beer of the month. It was Huber forever. My roommate would always get that, until months later she realized that the beer didn't change by the month because she apparently wasn't going through the cases of Huber fast enough!
Also, I was trying to recall the last name of one of the wait staff. Her name was Christine, and her brother, Peter, was a bartender. She made great silver jewelry and I was hoping to look her up. If anyone knows her or her last name, I would appreciate it if you could let me know.

I remember seeing Liz Phair play to a packed house there. They also hosted some of the city's best Celtic musicians. In the mid to late 90's that was one of my favorite bars alongside Gunther Murphy's ( a shadow of its former self not really worthy of a visit anymore)
I used to think the brain was the most important part of the body. Then I realized who was telling me that.

I believe that would be the night when Schatz MacArthur could be seen dancing on the bar of the Augenblick in her underwear.

    Who could ever forget!
