Hey! I'm the guy from Intelligentsia listed above!

We will have the snifters for sale at DLD, although they went pretty fast last year, we have a couple hundred that will be available at our little coffee booth at the event.

Also, some pictures from the event last weekend, I hope y'all enjoyed it! I know I sure did.

    Updates from 3Floyds

    1. Gates open at 10:00 am
    2. The Darklord bottle limit will be 4 bottles per person.
    3. There will be a lottery for extremely limited, hand bottled, hand numbered barrel aged variations. Guests will exchange their event tickets for a Golden Ticket with a scratch off section. If their ticket scratches off as a winner, they will have the opportunity to purchase one bottle of one of the four variations in addition to the 4 bottles of Darklord. The variations are:
Darklord aged in Pappy Van Winkle 23 year barrels
    Darklord aged in brandy barrels
Darklord aged in brandy barrels with vanilla beans
Darklord de Muerte, DL aged in bourbon barrels with ancho and guajillo peppers
These hand bottled, hand numbered, hand waxed bottles will sell for $50.00.

I'm a first timer who was lucky enough to snag a ticket when they went on sale. A couple questions:
    1. If I don't have any interesting beer, will I miss out on the festival aspect of it? I could go to Binny's, etc., to pick something up, but I assume that even the craft beers that Binny's sells would be considered pedestrian by this crowd...is that right?
    2. I'm in the C group, so I assume we'll want to grab dinner after. Any Munster-area restaurant recommendations? (I live in Lakeview, so anything in between Munster & Lakeview would work.)

The nice thing about DLD is that many of the attendees are from out of town, and out of distribution, for many things in Chicago. If you bring some Half Acre, Metropolitan, and Two Brothers, you should be able to make some friends from elsewheres with interesting locals. People are also quite generous with their pours of extremely rare bottles (although I'll certainly miss rolling kegs of homebrew this year). Personally, I'll probably crack a Rare and a Big John and maybe a '10 DL, and otherwise stick to the Iron Works Alt I picked up. I'd be happy to meet up with a few LTHers.

slim pickings for dinner unfortunately...good mexican but it's a storefront (so kinda low on atmosphere) is Memo's Taco Mex (http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=31469&hilit=memo%27s+taco+mex). Giovanni's is decent Italian pretty nearby (some info on Giovanni's and other NWI spots here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9280&p=348039&hilit=giovanni%27s#p348039).

I'm not a huge fan but Aurelio's pizza has a location nearby and a lot of people like it.

Schoop's on Ridge Road is a favorite of mine in the area. Thin griddled patties with cripsy laced edges. Delicious.

Turn left on Ridge Road as you are headed north from Three Floyds on Calumet. Will be on the right side of the road about 2 or 3 minutes after turning.

I'll second the rec here for Fortune House. We had an amazing post-DLD meal there last year and would go back in a heartbeat. Make sure you get the Chinese-language menu and ask for a recommendation.

Also, if you're staying overnight, don't forget to pop in at Munster Donut the next morning. A perfect way to end the weekend.

There will be food at the event. Mind you, in years past, it wasn't really worth waiting in line for and who knows how long the food will last. On the other hand, Mike Sheerin wasn't in charge in years past and maybe this will be one of the particulars of the event most improved by the ticketing system. The pub itself will also be open, but expect even longer lines to get in. I'm not sure how late the brewpub would be open that day.

A bonus to waiting for the brewpub, though, is access to the most limited of FFF beers for that day. Typically, there are a few Dark Lord variants as well as other rare/limited releases (ie. barrel-aged Black Sun Stout) that you can only buy in the brewpub. There is a strict one in/one out (hence the lines). All of these special releases tend to run out quickly.

The guest tap list was also released:
Founders Breakfast Stout, Founders Nemesis, Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, Founders Backwoods Bastard, Founders Newaygo County Cherry, Founders Devil Dancer, Founders Double Trouble, Victory Smoked & Oats,Victory Headwaters Pale, Victory Braumeister Pils, Schlafly Kolsch, Schlafly Imperial Stout, Van Steenberg Monk’s Ale, Brewdog paradox smokehead, Bells Batch 10,000, Bells Oatmeal Stout, Left Hand TNT weizen doppelbock, Dogfish Head My Antonia, Dogfish Head Worldwide Stout, Dogfish Head Old School Barleywine, Dogfish Head Burton Baton, Ommegang Gnomegang, Bruery Saison De Lente, Bruery Loakal Red, Bruery Old Richland, Goose Island Bourbon County Stout Rare, Schlenkerla Fasten Beer, Schlenkerla Oat Smoke, Schlenkerla Maerzen, Futhermore Knot Stock, Futhermore Oscura, La Rulles Estivale, Aventinus Eisbock, Sierra NevadaOliva Dubbel, Oakshire Heart Shaped Box, Oakshire Imperial Overcast Espresso Stout. Plus a couple more on the way…
    (emphasis mine)

As for what beer to bring, mtgl nailed it – what’s pedestrian to you will be brand new to the folks from Colorado, South Carolina, New Jersey, etc.. Half Acre is releasing Ginger Twin on Friday and folks on BeerAdvocate continually go apesh*t for Daisy Cutter – consider grabbing a growler of each from the brewery (or bottles/cans). And/or a growler from Revolution, Piece, maybe even the Goose Island brewpub. Even if you bring Old Style, it’s not like there are roving bands of Beer Police who will toss you out of the event. More than anything, just bring what you like.
    best,
    dan

Just an FYI for people planning on bringing a cooler. 3 Floyds posted this on BeerAdvocate

Coolers sizes up to 30 quarts will be allowed in. Wheels or no wheels doesn't matter. If it's larger than 30 quarts, leave it at home or in the car. It's basically a space and safety issue. DLD is difficult enough to navigate without having to jump coffin hurdles every 10 feet. Please work with us on this and make it a more enjoyable day for everyone.

My earlier recommendation of Fortune House still holds, but I'd also suggest Mishkenut Mediterranean which is next to Schoop's on Ridge Road. It's basically Middle-Eastern food, but...the chef/owner had an Italian restaurant in Jerusalem before moving his family to the US a few years ago. There's Italian influences in the food, which makes it pretty unique (and the reason for 'Mediterranean' in the name). The food is very good, and I could see Mishkenut being a GNR if more LTHers ventured into NW Indiana. A big added bonus is that Mishkenut is BYO with no corkage. The atmosphere is casual, so whatever you're wearing will be fine.

Note: if you go to Schoop's or Mishkenut, make sure to turn right at the street (Meadow Ln) just after you pass John's pizzeria, then make an immediate left into the parking lot behind the buildings facing Ridge Road. This will save you from going around the block a couple times trying to figure out where to park.

    Hey LTH folks,

I'm looking for anyone who has a Group A or Group B ticket, but who would rather be going to Dark Lord Day at night.

We don't have any extra tickets, but basically all of our little beer snob friends have Group A tickets, except for the guy who bought the wrong group and ended up with Group C.

We all have our physical tickets. Not the golden tickets yet, obviously. But we're all good...

It's not the worst problem in the world... we'd all rather have the evening tickets, actually... but if anyone out there has a group A ticket (just one) and would rather be going in the late afternoon or evening, you should please feel free to get in touch... PM, or email cwptacek at gmail dot com. We would ideally make the swap AT Three Floyds tomorrow night... so that there's no craigslist-esque weirdness... the dude with the spare ticket is like 6' 5" and 280... I wouldn't want him to creep you out. :)

Again, we're all expecting to be there all day, but if we were going to leave early, that is only possible if this guy switches his group. I imagine we might be able to arrange that down there on the day of the event... but we might not, so I wanted to give this a shot.

Everything is on the up and up.

Would love to hear from people on this. And no, there is no way any one of us has a ticket for sale. They were $100 last week on StubHub... they're $300 now. Soul-less! We intend to drink our tickets.

Thanks for reading. If this is useful for you, GET IN TOUCH!

    - Chris

Edit: FWIW, we might be just as cool with trading 2 group A tickets for 2 Group C tickets. I have to find out from the folks who will be attending.

I think the people trying to sell them for a ridiculous price figure they're going to go themselves if they don't get their ridiculous price in order to buy the beer and then sell it on eBay for profit. I really hope none of those people get the opportunity to buy one of the special bottles. I know if my wife or I (or both) can buy one we will be drinking it, despite the likelihood that we could probably make over $200 in profit selling the thing.

BTW, if anyone wants to trade a 2010, we didn't get to go last year and wouldn't mind having one or two bottles to fill in the hole in our vertical.

I live close to 2 Brothers, so I guess I'll do my duty to grab a few beers to bring down, for those who don't live in the area... just to share some decent craft brews.

I was at the Intelligencia event, which was mindblowingly fun. So cool. So my first experience of Dark Lord was having 4 vintages of the stuff in one sitting. That's so wrong. My favorites were the 09 and the 10. A lot of people preferred the 08. I have a feeling that a great deal of that has to do with how different the 08 was to the others... more alcohol taste... slicker mouth feel... all 4 were amazing. I do think that Stone's 2008 Russian Imperial Stout (the one they barrel aged... the 07 or 09 was smoked, and I sort of hated it... a bar near my house had 5 or 6 years of the stuff on draft this winter) is RIGHT THERE with it. I think if you poured both into snifters, people would just THANK YOU and not worry about choosing a winner.

But I love the fact that this is a local event... necessary limits aside, this is so cool. And FFF makes most of my favorite beers in the world.

If it's the same as last year's info, which I suspect it is,

    http://3floyds.com/map.jpg

That's the full pic. The pinkish red parking lots were apparently off limits, whereas the green parking lots (I couldn't see which ones were green until I expanded the pic) are fair game. I think that's enough parking, since this will be smaller than last year.

I suspect parking is going to fall into the 'known unknowns' category at this point. Given how the event has been over-hauled this year, I wouldn't necessarily count on anything from previous years still being the case. Having said that, there's a war memorial off Calumet Ave. with a small parking lot as well as another park (fka landfill!) across Calumet with several large parking lots. There's a housing development south of the industrial park where we parked last year - there were no signs about parking restrictions, as far as we could tell.

The issue with parking along the streets of the industrial park itself is that the 2-lane street gets narrowed to 1-lane. If the changes to how the event works this year are due to liability/safety issues in addition to a more general 'be a good neighbor' attitude, parking along the streets may be curtailed moreso than with last year.

A popular question on BA at the moment is how early people can show up at all - gates open at 10am, but how strict will the 'no loitering' policy be prior to that. For me, I'd just say that's another 'known unknown' and hope it works out. At least we have an answer on precisely how large a cooler will be allowed... ;)
