I've had the Martha's Vineyard and Bella Oaks and recently purchased a 1996 that doesn't have a vineyard identified on the bottle. Does that mean Heitz isn't using its own grapes for this wine?

Not necessarily. It may just be that these grapes aren't from one particular vineyard. And it isn't necessarily the case that a winery uses their own grapes for wines with vineyard designations. Lots of really nice wines are made from grapes the wine makers purchased. People seem to like Veuve Cliquot a lot and they not only purchase grapes they purchase bulk wine.
