It's winter. It's crazy cold out. HOT CHOCOLATE TIME!

    Love Bittersweet's and Twisted Sister's!

    Any that I'm missing?
Or any ridiculously great cocoa to purchase and make at home?

    Cheers!

Haven't had any in a while, but while waiting for a selection of truffles to be packaged at Vosges (the Michigan Ave. location) just prior to Xmas '07 I was given a complimentary hot chocolate that was so delightful, I made like a well-trained consumer and immediately bought 2 of their mixes. My understanding is that they went over very well with their eventual recipients.

If I was ever in the area I'd gladly stop in and pick some up to enjoy for myself in this terrible cold of late.

You can buy them on the Vosges website.

I just make mine out of cocoa powder (and whatever else I'm in the mood for) at home.

It's not hot chocolate in the traditional sense, but I've developed a costly habit that is ArgoTea's seasonal White Frostea--white chocolate, mint tea and milk. At almost $5 for a medium, it's definitely not a sustainable habit (thank goodness it's seasonal!), but it's the comfort drink extraordinaire for me.

I crave a Parisian-style hot chocolate whenever the wind blows toward me from the Blommer plant downtown. Alas, I can't get one on any street corner....

Let's see what this little packet of chemical "cocoa" mix has in it....sugar, nonfat dry milk, whey, coconut oil, cocoa, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, , dipotassium phosphate...........barf...into the trash you go.

I have a recent favorite, Taza chocolate with guajillo chile. Nice after burn. Reminds me of the hot chocolate in Oaxaca, only more expensive.

My absolute favorite is the Williams-Sonoma Peppermint Hot Chocolate. God knows it's pretty pricy, but if you are looking for an indulgence (and what else is chocolate?) then it's definitely worth it.

The Vosges hot chocolate sounds divine. By the way how exactly do you pronounce Vosges? I think I heard its something like Vaey zsh. Or is it Vo zsh?

VO' - zh. Do they still make the white chocolate lavender version? It is delicious, but should only be consumed at home. That stuff will put you out quicker than a 70's lude.

They do and that one in particular is what I tend to remember when I think of sampling their hot chocolates.

This may sound a little crazy, but you may want to try the hot chocolate at Hot Chocolate. Whil you are there you can sample some of the best desserts in Chicago.

Anyone know where to buy Spanish hot chocolate n Chicago? I have a small and dwindling stash from a trip to Spain, but one day it will be gone, and probably before I get back to Spain.

An employee at Trader Joe's turned me on to their Drinking Chocolate. It's good if you like darker, less sweet hot chocolate.

Interestingly, I was watching an America's Test Kitchen recently and Swiss Miss came out on top in their tasting. The host said he understood now why his kids always want it (although it wasn't the one he picked).

I saw a display of single origin drinking chocolate at the Whole Foods in Glenview (near the gelato and espresso). They had chocolate from a bunch of different places. I didn't notice in particular, but Spain could have been among them.

Yesterday I noticed my box says "Sipping Chocolate" and not Drinking Chocolate. It comes in a tin and is with the coffee/tea stuff.

I used to work at Rush St. Luke's Medical Center - Dermatology and there was a little kiosk in the lobby, in the entrance around the corner from the Blue Line. That was the tastiest hot chocolate ever, especially with a little orange in it. I would get it all the time after walking from the el. I often think about going back, but it's probably gone or changed to a Starbucks now. Great thread idea!

Any new places to get fresh hot chocolate/cocoa?

I seem to remember Hot Chocolate selling flights, but I don't see that on the menu anymore.

I fell in love with the hot chocolate and stout marshmallows from Salted Caramel at that nice little artisan holiday market. At the moment, they sell at some local farmer's markets, Dose, etc or you can order and ship or pick up at their kitchen in Jefferson Park:

They will apparently be at the Andersonville Winter Market this Sunday.

I used to love that fakey raspberry hot chocolate that comes in packets. In fact, I loved everything with that fake raspberry shit in it! Until I read this today:

I love that Caribou melts real chocolate into their mochas and hot chocolates. Head above the rest. I think they use guittard.

Guittard is an excellent choice for top-notch hot chocolate. It has a rich flavor without the icky aftertaste of Nestle's or Ghiradelli, and it melts smoothly. Now if I only knew where to buy it....

They used to sell it at Costco. I haven't looked in quite a while, though.
