I was at Schuba's for a show last night and thought I would buy a round of Michelob Lagers for my party (while I enjoy "good beer", I would not consider myself a beer snob and enjoy macrobrews for refreshing and cheaper drinking while out and about) and found, to my dismay, that AB has changed the bottle design.

They went from the classy, distinctive bottle many of us have come to embrace:

    :?

While I am sure Michelob Lager sales aren't blowing AB away, this redesign surely can't help, right?

I want my old bottle back!

I'm going to guess, and this is purely a guess- the new bottle is cheaper and possibly easier to package based on the more common size.

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago about how AB's new owners are taking an ax to costs, so this very well might be the case.

In addition to this, the new bottle looks more like your basic micro brew, which they thought might add credibility to the beer. To me, the old bottle looks like something trendy in the 70's.

Agreed. To me, the old bottle looks very dated. And not in a good retro kind of way.

That said, I hardly ever drink, so I doubt their marketing department cares what I think :-)

This happened once before, and while I can't find any articles about it, I seem to recall that a revised version of the teardrop bottle was reintroduced because sales had dropped off dramatically. I documented the return of the classic bottle a year ago and its subsequent disappearance in this thread. I also complained on the Michelob site and go this blah response:

    Hi Nathaniel,

Thanks for taking the time to contact Michelob Brewing Co. about our Michelob bottles. I’m certainly happy to provide you with more information about the decision to change our bottles.

As you found, we have moved Michelob Lager from its signature teardrop bottle to the embossed bottle used for the other Michelob Brewing Co. beers to give the brand family a consistent look.

You may also have noticed that the beer’s name on the label reads Michelob Original Lager. This slight change further establishes Michelob Original Lager as the foundation of the Michelob Brewing Co. collection, while also distinguishing it from the variety of other Michelob beer styles within this growing portfolio.

The bottom line is that everything we do is guided by the consumer. I have shared your comments within my group. As tastes and preferences have evolved over the years, we’ve made some changes to meet those needs. We remain committed to our core brands, and this is just the next evolution of the Michelob family of beers. It is my job to ensure that every customer has a voice, and I’ll make certain that yours is heard.

Again, Nathaniel, thank you for writing and giving me the chance to talk beer. If you should have any other questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
