LeNell's, the amazing Red Hook, Brooklyn liquor store with its huge stock of bourbons, ryes, and other adult beverages has been closed for some months because of a lease problem (think Patty's). Those of us on her email list have just learned that the closure is permanent with the possibility that LeNell Smothers will be moving to Mexico. This is a real loss to the quality of life in New York, in Red Hook, and for those of us who treasure artisanal liquors.
Although I suggested that she try her hand in Chicago, I think this is the end of a happy road. Drink a Manhattan to LeNell.

Toast, as every breakfaster knows, isn't really about the quality of the bread or how it's sliced or even the toaster. For man cannot live by toast alone. It's all about the butter. -- Adam Gopnik
