I used Meyer's rum but I think maybe I need to get a white rum. Pls advise. I like to add a squeeze and a slice of lime.

I like Gosling's Black Seal, but it's the opposite of white rum. I honestly don't think that white rum bring enough flavour to the party. One of the best cuba libres that I've ever had was using Appleton Special Gold

Okay good point but I was thinking the Meyers had too much of a traditional dark rummy taste and I needed something lighter. For dark rum, I'll keep the Meyers until I finish it. A lot of people seem to pooh pooh dark rum for drinks. In my family dark rum was used for fruitcakes, and for egg nog and not seen as worth much else.

Dark & Dirty = Pusser's and mexican coke
or a Rum Bull = Pusser's & red bull cola.
FYI, red bull cola contains zero red bull energy drink.
It's just a cola produced under the red bull corporate umbrella.
No phosphoric acid or high fructose corn syrup.

This is odd. I never liked rum, with 2 exceptions. Overproof rum( can't give you any names, but I always got it from my Haitian friends ) and Malibu.

As I broke last night's Bahai* Fast at Kuma's Corner I spied a bottle of Malibu Rum & thought what a wonderful reminder of summer time it could be mixed with coke.

I love the malibu rum with pineapple juice-
kind of like a b*stard pina colada
I still love Myers and coke
some people like captain morgan and coke-
I think maybe if the myers is too full for you, and a white rum too bland, look for something gold.

My wife is very fond of Sailor Jerry and Coke...not my favorite, but I'll admit it's a nice step up from Captain Morgan.

My Cuba Libre of choice is Havana Club Blanco and Coke made from real sugar with a splash of lime juice and Angostura Bitters.

I like Cruzan Black Strap - but then it's really, REALLY, the opposite of a lite rum. :) Cheap and "rum-y" from the blackstrap molasses - it makes for a good mixer (IMO).

Good points. I am trying to explore the rums I like best but am looking to see what others like in their rum and cokes. Many people do not even like rum and coke so they are kind of apathetic to the type of rum.

IMO, the key elements are using real-sugar-Coke and fresh lime juice. As for the rum, I really think it comes down to personal preference. I prefer a clear rum and have enjoyed this beverage quite a bit with Flor de Cana 4-year, clear and Cruzan Aged, clear.

I want to try with the white rums to see what I like better. The limes are important too. They do have to be fresh absolutely. Oddly the best Persian limes I have gotten came from Peapod. They are really juicy and have a faint coconut flavor to them, very delicious. On the other hand I bought some Persian limes at Aldi that were very bad...woody and they were dark green and almost devoid of juice. The lime is important to the drink which I believe is called a cuba libre.

Probably Barbancourt 7 star ? (sp?) A delicious Rhum, but too good to mix with coke. Even the 5 star deserves a better fate. Pusser's is also too good to mix with coke. I used to drink Methuselam with coke (can you still get that here?)
Personally, I would just stick with the cheap stuff, but then I am not a big Cuba Libre fan.

I happen to think that Red Bull Cola tastes like ass (specifically, clove and licorice-flavored ass), but I can see how some would prefer it for a Rum and Coke/Cola -- it's a much stronger-flavored mixer, which would hold up being diluted by the liquor. Alternative: Stick with The Real Thing and use a spiced rum.

One issue with trying rums is that there isn't really a good rum bar in this city: Scotch? Bourbon? Tequila? Beer? Check, Check, Check, Check. Rum? Not really. Oh, when I win the lottery....

As far as "Rum and Coke" rum, and since you are doing it with lime, you might as go on the traditional route and look for Puerto Rician style white rums. The Bacardi Silver is garbage, stay away from that stuff. Cruzan, from nearby St. Croix, use to make a slightly aged "white" rum (it was actually more straw colored) that was pretty good, but I don't see it at Binny's anymore. Sorry I don't have more opinion on this, but I like the darker, more flavorful rums for drinking neat, and in cocktails.

Not the real Methusalem but yes there is a label that says methusalem and it is not bad with coke.

I'm glad that you mentioned Flor de Cana. I have been doing some traveling to Nicaragua and usually bring back a couple of bottles. While not exactly for mixing their 12 year and 18 year rums are outstanding. As far as rum and cokes go I do enjoy both the 4-year clear and the 7 year Grand Reserve. If you ever make it to Nica you can pick up a bottle of the 7-year Grand Reserve for the princely sum of $9.99 in the duty free shop.

If you are making rum and coke, is your preference to make it with a light white rum, or a dark rum?

3 Dots and a Dash has a solid rum collection. BellyQ has a surprisingly nice offing.

I've been saying and hoping rum (and closely related new world spirits) is the next big thing for 15 years but right now is as close as we've been and it hasn't happened.

Also, I prefer a rare, illegal Guayabita with Iron Beer to the traditional rum and coke, mostly because it seems like the pompous foodie thing to do. And Gauyabita really is a very cool rum-based beverage.
