Moonshine at Sam's Club

Hi- I was just at the Sam's Club store in Evanston, and I noticed that they are selling Ole Smoky Moonshine from Tennessee, for $23.99 for a 750ml mason jar. I thought moonshine was cheap to make? Is that a reasonable price for it? They are selling it at Sam's Club in five states right now. Apparently moonshine was not legal to make and sell in Tennessee until recently. They sell both apple pie moonshine, and cherries packed in moonshine. Thanks, Nancy

Moonshine is cheap because no taxes are paid on it. This is also why it's illegal. A large percentage of the cost of liquor in a store is tax.

If you're buying it in a store, you're really not buying moonshine, but rather white dog or corn whiskey. White dog is hot right now, and in more ways than one it's like vodka. There's not a lot to distinguish one from another as far as taste is concerned, so marketing steps in, with price just another factor in that equation.
