    As a native Michigander, I am a little spoiled when it comes to excellent, fresh-roasted Turkish coffee. I've been a customer of Dearborn's Hashem's Nuts and Coffee Gallery for years ( http://www.hashems.com/ ), and it is a joy to watch the blending, mixing, and grinding of the beans to the my exact specification. While Hashem's does have shipping, which I make ready use of, I was wondering whether there are any local roasters in the Chicago area that will grind to fineness needed for Turkish coffee (far finer than espresso). Vacuum-packed imported coffee is no substitute.

    There are several Turkish restaurants in Chicago, you might eat dinner at one and ask where they get their coffee, or check out if Senem's sells by the pound?

    Al-Khayam on Kedzie grinds coffee. They have two roasts available ("brown" and "black") and claim the roasting is done locally in Chicago. They mix it to specification and have cardamom available by request. I ordered half light, half dark without cardamom. I requested it ground for Turkish coffee, but I was disappointed to find that the grind is very coarse, coarser than an espresso grind, rather than the smooth, talc-like powder to which I am accustomed. The price is around $8 per pound.

    I have called several SE European grocery stores (Serbian, Bosnian) to little effect. The standard in Chicago seems to be vacuum-packed imported brands like Mehmet Effendi (which is what Senem uses).

    In Andersonville, Pars Persian Store has whole beans delivered by a roaster every 2-3 weeks, and they have a grinder with a Turkish setting. This isn't exactly satisfactory, as I drink around a pound of coffee per week, and I would prefer the beans to have a faster turnover. I saw a variety of beans sold in one-pound bags, but I am not sure if the owner would be accommodating in grinding a half-pound of light and a half-pound of dark together. After I get through the Al-Khaym coffee, I'll likely try Pars's product.

    Have you tried Artopolis in Greektown or this Bosnisan cafe? You might call Cafe Orchid also. The owner is a nice guy and appears to be at the center of the Turkish (and central Asian, for that matter) Chicago community.

    Check out Sahar Market at 4855 N Kedzie. They have a good variety of Middle Eastern coffee beans and they grind on the premises.

    Maybe buy a coffee grinder?
