    Hello,
I am looking for some suggestions for a date this week. Prefer downtown or northside. Looking for place to have drinks with a volume level that allows conversation. Thanks!

I do not think you can beat Pops for Champagne

I have also heard great things about Pop's.

Another place I like that I've been to a lot is 404 Wine Bar. It's attached to the much louder Jack's Bar & Grill, but once you go through the doorway to 404 (at the south end of the building), you notice a big difference. It's fairly cozy, and you can order food & drinks off both menus.

Two places up north that I think fit the bill and highly recommend are Volo (previously discussed here) and Uncommon Ground (covered in this thread). Uncommon Ground also has music most nights (every night?). It may not always be people/bands you'd go out of your way to see but it can definitely help set the mood.

    Volo
    2008 West Roscoe Street
Monday through Thursday 5pm to 12am
Friday and Saturday 5pm to 2am
    Closed Sunday

    Uncommon Ground
    3800 North Clark Street
Sun - Thu 9am to Midnight
    Fri - Sat 9am-2am

Pop's is great, but if you're more into the Red Hot Chili Peppers than live jazz, stop in at their sister establishment, Star Bar, right next door. They have the same wine and food as Pops but with a more rock and roll vibe--they have concerts of various bands playing on the TVs--and they don't have a cover, whereas Pops usually does.

For near north/river north, you can't beat Narcisse. It's not cheap, but what's not to like about a champagne and caviar bar? Some of the booths can be very cozy, although it can get crowded.

    Narcisse
    710 N. Clark St.

For the record, when I clicked on the Metromix link you posted, it mentions Narcisse as a former Champagne & Caviar bar, and that this place has focused more on its food lately. It also says that they still have a decent champagne collection.

I wonder if the "former" refers to the fact that caviar is very soon to become scare due to the ban (or future bans) of harvesting caviar in the wild? I know you cannot obtain Beluga caviar legally anymore.
