Found a bag of russets in my garage that have started growing eyes. As we decide what to plant in our organic garden I am thinking about growing some of these taters. But is it really worth the space, time and effort to grow these ubiquitous spuds that can be purchased cheaply at the grocers? It sounds relatively easy-just cut up the potato, plant eye side up and keep moving soil around the growing tubers to keep them away from the sun. But it sounds like they are prone to infestation and I would not want to attract any new bugs to our garden. What do you all think?

Depends how much space you have. You'll never save money by growing your own potatoes if you count your labor costs.

A contact a while back that I met at a COOP in Milwaukee has a real neat concept. It is called the Kenosha Potato project and he is a seed saver. Here is a small article about growing potatoes. I do not know much about it except that one needs sandy soil. Hope it helps!

Additionally, check out his link for seed potatoes as there must be at least 100 varieties!

Sandy soil is nice but I got a pretty good harvest last year in my clay ridden local soil. I planted All Blue and Rose Finn Apple. I saved some All Blues and have those in the ground for this year's crop. They're peeking out of the ground already.
