Free Black Walnuts

Spotted this on Craigslist Chicago:

I have 1.5 acres with lots of black walnut trees. The walnuts are falling rapidly and will do so for a few more weeks yet. You can fill up bags or even a truck if you like. All you have to do is pick them up off the lawn.

that's hilarious. my parents have a big black walnut tree, but they are impossible to shell. there must be some secret method.

We have tons of these. The best way I've seen is put them in a blanket and drive over them. You lose some but some come out o.k.
We tincture the entire walnut in alcohol. It's supposed to have anti parasitic properties. Don't know if that's true, but people pay good money for it.

Couldn't someone collect these and feed them to pigs before slaughter? I'm thinking about the serrano ham (pata negra?) pigs which fattened on the acorns from cork trees.

Acorns fed to pigs are like marshmellows compared to the shells of black walnuts.

I will be surprised if unshelled black walnuts are fed to pigs. I will be even more surprised, if someone invested the effort to shell those black walnuts and still fed them to pigs.

And Cathy2 is not even considering the considerable hassle/mess of removing the hulls of black walnuts before shelling.

Given the intensity of flavor, probably from the oil in the nut, of black walnuts, I wonder what pork from pigs fed on black walnuts would taste like. The flavor and softness/hardness of pork fat are quite dependent upon feed.

I was at the Dane County Market in Madison, WI yesterday. I inquired to the vendor selling shelled black walnuts if he had heard of anyone feeding them to pigs. He shot me a look and never bothered to reply. I'm sure he thought I was some crazy overpaid lady who would also bathe the pig in champagne. He did reply to my earlier question about shelling black wanuts, "I use a vise."

This is not true. Unfortunately, the post you're referring to linked to a third-party ad in Craigslist, and is over two years old.

well, it was worth a try. We missed the harvest here, due to being out of state, and sure could use a gallon or so...know of anyplace to locate some?

You can buy black walnuts shelled from nutsonline.com for $13.99 a pound. They give discounts for larger quantities. Just a thought since I was just on their site a few minutes ago.
