Saw some refrigerated horseradish root at Jewel and was wondering if I could plant one. Bought an actual root to plant this year and it went moldy and I was still hoping to get one in the ground.

I'm not sure how well horseradish root from the Jewel will grow (it may be treated with something or too dry), but be aware that horseradish is very vigorous-- almost invasive. I planted some a while ago and it does spread laterally. One of my friends planted hers in a bed that already had mint-- like a cage match.

Chicago clay soil is not that great for nice roots either-- although I understand that a lot of the U.S. horseradish crop is grown in Illinois. I got my roots from Johnny's Seeds. If you want one of my volunteers, PM me your address and maybe we can work out a dropoff. Just promise not to blame me when it takes over!

P.S. Anyone want a lovage plant too?
