I've written about the Dog Walk at least once, and ever since I've been stopping there, the mysterious Beef-O has had me in its spell, but I've never gotten around to ordering it, especially as they have the right color of relish for hot dogs.

So today, of all days when the Catholics don't eat meat, I decided as a lapsed Jew to go for the double-meat challenge.

It's pretty good: a cheeseburger, topped with BBQ sauce, chopped onions, and giardinera, then smothered in a tong-ful of Italian beef, then more BBQ sauce. Overall, I thought the BBQ overwhelmed the Italian Beef flavors, but it provided a very juicy sandwich, lots of flavor. The cheeseburger is quite good with a lot of char flavor.

The Dog Walk is hard to spot -- it's around the corner from Irv's Men's Store in Palwaukee Plaza, Palatine and Milwaukee Avenues in Prospect Heights. Very inexpensive, and good stuff.
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?

Big fan of the dog walk. It's a weekly lunch stop for me for several years.

I love the beef-o, and they also make a gyro burger that reminds me of saner times from Sam's Chuckwagon in Wilmette (are they still there?) I'm also a fan of his philly's, especially with chicken.

The couple that run it are so efficient, and as I said, the husband knows how I take my food, even though I alternate between 3-4 menu items when I walk in. plus I love their fluent spanish.

And every time I leave, they say "see ya tomorrow"

They are a terrific value, although they recently raised their specials by $.50. A hot dog, fries, and coke is now $3.50. I think their quality surpasses the closest hot dog/burger joints (Ira's in Northbrook and Dear Franks in Glenview))

Very nice. I frequent Monica's for lunch (same plaza) never been to the Dog Walk. Will be there next week for the trial run after reading this. Thanks!

Ok, so I had to go today. The prospect of a decently priced grease joint in this area had to be checked out. I saw the Gyroburger on the menu, and had to have it. Didn't care what it was, liked the element of surprise. To my amazement, it was a cheeseburger topped with sliced gyro meat off the spit, with onions, tomatoes, and tzatziki. I had reservations after seeing the orange melted processed "cheese food" at the bottom of the pile of greezy meats under the blanket of tzatziki, but I gotta say, this thing was absolutely delicious!
Beef sammich was serviceable - nothing special. Not a destination beef sammich.
