I've
written about the Dog Walk at least once, and ever since I've been stopping there, the mysterious
Beef-O has had me in its spell, but I've never gotten around to ordering it, especially as they have the right color of relish for hot dogs.
So today, of all days when the Catholics don't eat meat, I decided as a lapsed Jew to go for the double-meat challenge.
It's pretty good: a cheeseburger, topped with BBQ sauce, chopped onions, and giardinera, then smothered in a tong-ful of Italian beef, then more BBQ sauce. Overall, I thought the BBQ overwhelmed the Italian Beef flavors, but it provided a very juicy sandwich, lots of flavor. The cheeseburger is quite good with a lot of char flavor.
The Dog Walk is hard to spot -- it's around the corner from Irv's Men's Store in Palwaukee Plaza, Palatine and Milwaukee Avenues in Prospect Heights. Very inexpensive, and good stuff.
What is patriotism, but the love of good things we ate in our childhood?
