Post #1 - November 8th, 2004, 2:28 amThe horror that is Check Please! reached new heights when El Mercado's empanadas were put down decisively. I think they were compared to Pizza Hut pizza puffs (if something like that even exists). I think the only way to watch this show is to imagine that it's really a mockumentary directed by Christopher Guest as a satire on foodies.

Post #3 - November 8th, 2004, 8:50 amYou mean the Argentine grocey on Southport? Seems like an odd choice for Check Please. (Unless they had the empanadas at Tango Sur next door.) I agree that this is solid proof of the "uneven" quality of raters on the show. Me, I think the picadillo empanadas at Mercado are about as good as they get in Chicago, and really not much different from what you might get in a similar bodega in BA.

Post #5 - November 8th, 2004, 10:30 amThey did go to Tango Sur, but he blasted the empanadas (while mis-pronouncing them) and said that you can also get them at the grocery store next door, but he wouldn't.
