    The horror that is Check Please! reached new heights when El Mercado's empanadas were put down decisively. I think they were compared to Pizza Hut pizza puffs (if something like that even exists). I think the only way to watch this show is to imagine that it's really a mockumentary directed by Christopher Guest as a satire on foodies.

    Love the Christopher Guest reference!However,after seeing Pita Inn on Check Please convinced my sister to go there Sunday.And she liked it.

    You mean the Argentine grocey on Southport? Seems like an odd choice for Check Please. (Unless they had the empanadas at Tango Sur next door.) I agree that this is solid proof of the "uneven" quality of raters on the show. Me, I think the picadillo empanadas at Mercado are about as good as they get in Chicago, and really not much different from what you might get in a similar bodega in BA.

    I kept cringing every time the guy pronounced it "empanada." Clearly, he couldn't know what he's talking about... :lol:

    They did go to Tango Sur, but he blasted the empanadas (while mis-pronouncing them) and said that you can also get them at the grocery store next door, but he wouldn't.
