    Hello.

    Any suggestions for vietnamese? Casual?

I remember going somewhere in the Vietnamese neighbourhood, eating grilled bbq types of beef. That's all I remember, but I recall it being very tasty.

    Ideas?

    Cheers,

It sounds to me like you are talking about Korean as opposed to vietnamese cuisine. Several Korean restaurants in town feature live charcoal grilling. Some of those restaurants are discussed in the following posts:

    Hi,

Could you be thinking of this?

Vietnamese cuisine often has a lot of charcoal-grilled meaty bits, but usually pork (or goat), not beef. When I was in Vietnam last year porky bits grilled over charcoal (with the associated charcoal distributors dropping off their honeycomb-formed charcoal blocks) was a pervasive sight.

I would agree wholeheartedly that charcoal-grilled beef seems to be a Korean thing. As a secular, pork-loving Jew, however, I've got to side with the Vietnamese grilled pork...

I was actually tempted to go here on the way home (I take the Red Line to Belmont from downtown... just a few extra stops means Argyle St...) - it's really good stuff.

Hmmm.....I do remember it being grilled beef with noodles or rice. Maybe not bbq'd-I'm not sure anymore, but definitely grilled beef and Vietnamese. Went with some vietnamese people!

You are most likely thinking of grilled beef served with thin rice noodle and an array of herbs and veggies to roll table side in rice paper. Choices are, at least in Chicago, typically beef, pork, shrimp or chicken.

This is not an uncommon dish, for example it may be found at Hai Yen under Nhung Giam Hoac Nuong Vi, though the other dish you may be thinking of, Bo La Lot, which is marinated beef wrapped in bo la lot (an aromatic leaf) then grilled, may be slightly less common.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

Grilled beef is often a component in bun noodle dishes (bun bo nuong), as well as in a salad with lemongrass dressing that seems to go by different names.
