My favorite aunt wants to go out for crepes for her birthday lunch. Any suggestions? I saw the thread for the expensive crepe place in Lombard-- somewhere closer to the NW side of Chicago would be best. She had the crepes at Lutz last week and said that her other choice, "Crepe Crave", seems to have closed. Prince Creperie in Albany Park has also closed.

Give Icosium Kafe on Clark St. a try. My one and only visit there (so far) was very good!

I have not been there yet, but Bistro Bordeaux's Pascal Berthoumieux recently opened Creperie Saint-Germain in the old Donatella space on Sherman in Evanston.

In the same location since 1972 (well, sort of) and hasn't changed much since then. I have liked it for 30 years!

A great suggestion, just note that they're closed on Mondays.

Is La Creperie related to the Crepe place that used to be at woodfield?
    The name sounds familiar.

La Creperie has had only a single location, 2845 N Clark, since it opened 40 years ago this June. I believe the restaurant is still run by the founder, Germain Roignant, now with help from his son and family. You're probably thinking of the Woodfield location of Magic Pan. The first Chicago location opened on Walton over 40 years ago and the chain soon expanded to several suburban malls.

Thank you for correcting me. I though that the name was the same (I admit to being wrong), and always loved the pet store across the hall at Woodfield before it became a yuppie scum/ nothing a normal person would go to place. (years ago I could walk there from my house).

Yes La Creperie is the best and I have been going there since the 1970s. Very good. I love the salad with house dressing, ham and cheese crepe with mushrooms on top and we split a dessert crepe, banana strawberry. Yum.

Thank you everyone, the birthday Aunt very much enjoyed her trip to La Creperie. I had the creamed spinach crepe with mushrooms on top and she had some chicken crepe-- she said the sauce was delicious, with just a hint of horseradish. We both were disappointed in the mushrooms which, while fresh, should have been sauteed in butter or something-- they seemed to be blanched or something. The real standout at the meal was my daughter's Croque Monsieur, which was cheesy and perfectly browned, with delicious ham that had been cut into 1-inch squares to make the sandwich easier to eat.

Thank you again for the recommendations, we will try Creperie St. Germain next in our crepe quest!

    Cheers, Jen

We've become regulars at La Creperie again in the last few years, after an interregnum that lasted over two decades! I actually can't think of one other restaurant that has changed as little as La Creperie has and stayed in business. The only other one that comes to mind is R.J. Grunt's, but even though Grunt's looks the same (and basically is the same), its menu has "evolved" in various ways since 1972. If there is one thing different about La Creperie's menu today from when we first started going there in 1972 (or one picture on the wall that's not exactly where it was), I can't discern it. We love this about the place.

    A eulogy.

I have been going to La Creperie since 1979. My roommate got engaged there. My central-Illinois dad called it "glorified pizza". I was there with my sister, when a SNL/Second City star sat next to us on a first date.....

The crepes have always been good, and I have had crepes in Paris, Normandy, Quebec. I have been there twice in the last week. So many people have been there, to remember first dates, anniversaries, etc.

The simple house salad is excellent -- just like in France. The french onion soup may have been the first that I tried, and was certainly among the best.

My go-to was chicken creme with mushrooms. Lately it has been served with the mushrooms inside the crepe, but historically (!) it was served with sauteed button mushrooms on the side. Delicious. Boeuf bourguignon crepe. Coq au vin crepe. All excellent. I just had a ham and cheese crepe. It will change how I make them at home.

The dessert crepes were always wonderful. Remember Magic Pan? Remember their strawberry crepe -- crepe with maybe ice cream or whipped cream inside, with strawberries on top? Hell, no! This was a large square crepe filled with strawberries, with whipped cream on the side. Their chocolate crepe was divine -- real chocolate, melted to perfection, with whipped cream.

Thank you Germain & Sara for 41 years. Heartfelt condolences for Jeremy. And in the best of all meanings, bon voyage to all!

Just a reminder, today is the last day that La Creperie will be open, closing for good after dinner service tonight.

If you've been mourning the loss of La Creperie since it closed Aug. 22 when its owner retired, take heart: The iconic little French bistro at Clark and Diversey is scheduled to reopen, most likely in December.

This makes me so happy. Will definitely be one of the first customers. I've really missed this place.

Thread bump, it's auntie's birthday again-- anyone tried the rebooted La Creperie? I'll report back next week... just looked at the Iguana cafe menu and we're going to give it a try!

We've been, and we found no difference between the original and the reboot.

We tried the Iguana Cafe and it was a huge success-- auntie and kid agreed that the crepes were better than "that other place we went last time" (i.e. La Creperie before the reboot), although it was three years ago. The portions were generous, the service was friendly, and there was no wait at 11AM on a Sunday. Auntie is already making plans to bring her gal-pals there. Thanks for the recommendation LTH-- I never would have found this little treasure without you.

There is also Crepe Town near the northern edge of Lakeview. It's right off the Sheridan CTA Red line stop.

The food is delicious, but one time I was in there they were playing the Lillith Faire Compilation a la 1997 and it made my ears bleed.
