A eulogy.
I have been going to La Creperie since 1979. My roommate got engaged there. My central-Illinois dad called it "glorified pizza". I was there with my sister, when a SNL/Second City star sat next to us on a first date.....
The crepes have always been good, and I have had crepes in Paris, Normandy, Quebec. I have been there twice in the last week. So many people have been there, to remember first dates, anniversaries, etc.
The simple house salad is excellent -- just like in France. The french onion soup may have been the first that I tried, and was certainly among the best.
My go-to was chicken creme with mushrooms. Lately it has been served with the mushrooms inside the crepe, but historically (!) it was served with sauteed button mushrooms on the side. Delicious. Boeuf bourguignon crepe. Coq au vin crepe. All excellent. I just had a ham and cheese crepe. It will change how I make them at home.
The dessert crepes were always wonderful. Remember Magic Pan? Remember their strawberry crepe -- crepe with maybe ice cream or whipped cream inside, with strawberries on top? Hell, no! This was a large square crepe filled with strawberries, with whipped cream on the side. Their chocolate crepe was divine -- real chocolate, melted to perfection, with whipped cream.
Thank you Germain & Sara for 41 years. Heartfelt condolences for Jeremy. And in the best of all meanings, bon voyage to all!
