I finally went over to the Lawrence Ave. Huaraches Dona Chio. [Thought it hadn't been posted on and I could be the first to mention the new location. Silly rabbit.] Had an amazing lunch of a huarache con chorizo y papas. Spicy, meaty, savory. Delicious. Still good 20 minutes later when I brought it back to work to eat it.
I sat at a little bar-type spot while I waited for my order to be made, and got the watch the masa mistress shape the huaraches and other goodies. I think it must be no small trick to put a big smear of beans in the middle of the huarache dough and be able to make it thin enough AND stick together on the griddle. I asked if they were the same as the place in Rogers Park; the man's eyes lit up as he said "Oh, that's my sister's place".
Also got a cactus quesedilla. Fairly meh, but I ascribe that to the blandness of the ingredients, not any fault of the quesedilla.
