Hi all! I was hoping someone could help me out here. I searched the old posts, but couldn't find anything that fit exactly what I need...

    first, some particulars:

We're looking to go to dinner this saturday night, in the Western Burbs. We are based in Darien, but can go to Downers Grove, Naperville, Oakbrook, etc....

There will be 5 adults, and 2 kids. One is 6 months old, and the other is just turning 3.

It's my mother's birthday, who is a vegetarian. The rest of the party is pretty open to anything...

we are indian (and so do NOT want an indian restaurant)...and would prefer not to do something like Cheesecake etc...

I guess, I'm wondering if there is a nice restaurant out there that would be ok for our young kids? My mom eats out extensively in the area, and a nice room/ambiance would probably be more up her alley than the food quality...unfortunately :(

would be happy to answer questions, and am open to all suggestions!

    ($ is not an issue)

    thanks!

Sorry I can't be much more help, but my western burb data is kind of out of date. Does the Greek Islands on 22nd street still exist? If so, that might be a good choice. They are festive, kid friendly and have tons of veggie options. If it has closed, then some other Greek place might work (if there are any left). Doesn't Costa's have a branch out there? If there is still a branch of Tuscany in Oakbrook, that might also work.

Yes, both Greek Islands and Costas would work over in Oakbrook/Oakbrook Terrace Land. In the same area, the newest Capri outpost on Butterfield (Italian food, and Mama Capri is actually in the kitchen again at this one) would be another good choice. It is in the former Gianotti's space.

All are pleasant rooms, nicely done up and have meat free offerings. None would have problems with small children. Of the three, I prefer Greek Islands, but they all do fine.

Of course, there are a lot of other options, too, but these three are a bit upscale, large, noisy and should not have trouble with kids, the food is good, and there would be no problem getting multiple vegetarian options.

If Persian style fare is an option, I'd be thinking about that Reza's on Cermak in Oak Brook. While I love the things I love at Reza's, I have found that IMO, their vegetarian "stew" type dishes are not to my liking. Do not miss:

Mushrooms appetizer. I'd get one order for every two ppl if you like mushrooms. They are not stuffed or anything, just grilled, and brushed with this light lemon, garlic, and olive oil sauce that I really dig.

Vegetarian shami - these are just falafel in a pomegranite/walnut sauce. My wife cannot stop eating those when ordered. The menu makes them sound like they are some kind of special fancy different thing than falafels, but they are just falafels in fancy sauce. Still good.

    Grilled quails

Standard mid eastern dips and falafel with pita - I'm more a baba gannouj guy than a hummus guy at Reza's, but whatever.

Meat eaters - dark meat chicken kababs with dill rice. I can't order anything else, although the various kebabs are well received by the ppl I go with - they have tenderloin, shrimp, scallop etc. Oh, they also do whitefish and salmon. There are plenty of vegetarian entree options that I haven't really delved into. The few that I have tried were kinda lifeless, but for standard, mid eastern, dippy fare in a nice room, I like it a lot. And those mushrooms, quail and dark meat chicken are fab, imo.

We cannot be friends if you do not know the difference between Mayo and Miracle Whip.

I highly recommend Parkers Bar & Grill in Downers Grove, on Highland just south of its interchange with I-88. They used to be called Parkers Ocean Grill and they still have some of the freshest, most delicious seafood you'll find anywhere. They are also one of only about 40 restaurants in the United States certified for their authentic Neopolitan style pizza. It's a very nice place where well-behaved children/toddlers/infants wouldn't be a problem at all. I had lunch there earlier this week and it was as good as ever.
