I'm looking for a good square pie in Chicago. To be honest, I don't really need it to be true sicilian style, either. I'd be happy with a good nona style pie or a bakery style one, too. Any ideas?

I would start with the square sheet-pan pizza at D'Amato's on Grand Ave. right next door to Bari Foods.

The pizza is sold by the slice and can be anywhere between fresh out of the oven hot to room temp, depending what time you buy it. (I believe they can heat it up if it isn't hot but i really like it as is.) They sell sausage and cheese as options. It is heavy on the olive oil, very slight on cheese and in my humble opinion, delectable.

Agreed - D'amato's is tops. Freddy's in Cicero is right there in a breadier style, cooked to order; specify "square pan," our standard order is is "half a square pan of red pepper and pepperoni." At the other end of the spectrum, I'm in the middle of a Coalfire - Stop 50 - Great Lake in one week run (with some Jimmy's thrown into the middle yesterday for palate-cleansing), report coming after Wednesday.

OK, D'Amato's is officially on the list. Any other ideas?

My personal favorite Sicilian-style slice is at

    Palermo Bakery
    3317 N Harlem Ave
    Chicago, IL
    (773) 777-5957
    [closed Monday]

A fairly minimalist slice; not heavy on cheese or tomato, a bit oily. Most authentic to my taste, but all of my tastes were formed here, not in Sicily.

Sicilia Bakery on Lawrence is ok; they're a bit heavy-handed with the cheese, presumably to please American tastes.

Conca d'Oro is good, D'amato's is good. You might also want to try

    Sicilian Bakery
    4632 N Cumberland Ave
    Chicago, IL
    (773) 589-2602

So that should keep you busy checking out pizza for a while!

And you should just go to Freddy's in Cicero because it's really, really good. My personal nominee for best Italian restaurant in the Chicago area.

I have always been a big fan of the "spingione" at Rinaldi's on broadway - however the last time I had one (September) it was not as good as it had been, but I think it was improperly prepared.

You've had lots of recommendations. Surely your reseach must be will under way. How about a report? Which one(s) do you like?

an outstanding version is served at Ferrara's Bakery on Taylor off of Ogden Avenue.
There's is not as "moist" as D'Amato's which to me- is preferred!
Yesterday's lunch was a slice of their sausage and cheese Pizza, heated to perfection, served with a
cup of "love"- an Italian Chicken Soup with small pearl shaped pasta(don't recall the name- started with a "F"?)
and nice size chunks of chicken and vegetables! All for about $6.50- served with a small roll, too.

And, if you have room- try their Pignoli Cookies- one of the few places in town that sell these wonderful gems!
