Hi- A friend of mine is having a party at her mother's house tomorrow in Morton Grove. The mother and her son both celebrated a birthday this week, and the family is celebrating big time tomorrow. The son has a day job, but in his spare time he is a jazz drummer, and among other gigs he plays in a big band. The sons trio is going to be performing tomorrow, but all 20 of the members of the big band have also been invited, as well as some friends and family members. I just hope it does not rain tomorrow. It is only supposed to get up to 69 tomorrow, and so probably nobody will go swimming in the pool.

The daughter just told me that she is bringing in lots of food though, and she is ordering pizza. The mother lives near Dempster/Waukegan in Morton Grove. Are there any half way decent pizza places that do take out that are not going to charge a fortune for possibly as many as 30 people? I already looked on the board, and Pequod's has gotten a lot of love here, but are there any other places anybody might recommend.? I know Burt's is out. Thanks, Nancy

Pizano's in Glenview would be my choice. On Waukegan a couple miles north of Dempster.

I agree with Pizano's - there is also Giordano's in Morton Grove on Dempster and a bit further east Edwardo's in Skokie

You're just a couple minutes from Pequods. Normally I'd say Burts but they are closed due to family illness for a while.

If you want deep dish - Pequods anyday over Pizano's. But Pizano's is much better for thin crust. Goode & Fresh Pizza Bakery is actually pretty good too, and might be the best choice for a party as they do party size pizzas too. It's on Waukegan Rd just south of Lake Ave. There is also Barnaby's not far down Caldwell at Oakton in Niles for thin crust. Barnaby's of Northbrook is a GNR and some of us think it's one of our favorite thin pizzas anywhere, but the Niles one is pretty solid too.

Yikes! I've got to say, Goode and Fresh may be my least favorite pizza anywhere; sharp, underdeveloped sauce, uninteresting crust, subpar toppings. Stay away. Pizano's would certainly be my pick, or Barnabys.

Hi- I am sad to report that I found out that they had already ordered pizza from Sarpino's. They had six large pizzas delivered at 3:00pm, and they had requested that three large pizzas be delivered at 6:00pm. The first batch was ok but not great, even though some people commented about how good it was. The second batch arrived at 6:00pm, and I tried a piece from the second batch, and the dough was still semi raw on all three pizzas. The person that originally ordered the pizzas called them up after she received numerous complaints about the pizza, and they did deliver three more pizzas, but it took them about an hour to deliver them. The replacement pizzas were at least edible and cooked all the way through, but I am never ordering pizza from them.

The birthday cake was fantastic. It was a three layer cake, and it came from a bakery in Westmont. The person who's birthday was being celebrated today just turned 60, and as a sideline he is a jazz drummer, and so the cake was made to look like a drum. They also had a watermelon bowl that was filled with fruit, and they had a huge tossed salad, and some snack food.

BTW- They had a smaller crowd than expected. Only six of the twenty musicians that were invited to the party showed up, and so there were probably about 20 people all together at the party. The musicians performed for about three hours, and there was a jazz pianist/vocalist, who is going to be a Senior at Northwestern this fall, who was wonderful. I forget her name, but something tells me that she is going to make a name for herself. She is originally from Connecticut, and she has not decided if she will stay in the Chicago area when she graduates next summer, or go back home to Connecticut, and try to make it in NYC. She said that she has been doing some private parties this summer. Thanks, Nancy

 It's been a long time since I had it, and all I had was a slice. But it was good (and fresh!) at the time. :)
