We were thinking of heading to New Orleans for our anniversary but are apprehensive due
to the "mood" and don't want to feel inhibited about what we ingest--what do people know
about the food climate down there right now?

I have heard nothing but great things! I was there right as the oil spill started for Jazzfest and had nothing but great meals. I read on the dining section at http://www.nola.com all the time. You can check out past articles and see what is going on down there. I am trying to plan a trip as we speak!

We are planning a quick trip to the Lafayette area and wondered about the shell fish. But , call me naive, do you think that tainted seafood would be sold anywhere in Louisana? Think about the bad press-just one report would confirm our fears and everyone would stay away.

I was just in New Orleans and ate lots of gulf fish. Gulf fisherman need support now more than ever and gulf fish continues to be featured everywhere. The mood in New Orleans is the same as it ever was, you get knocked down, you get back up and make merry. Don't think twice about visiting.

Yeah you rite! I'm down here now & all kinds of gulf seafood are widely available. Some places are bringing oysters in from Texas, as it will take time for the oyster beds in Louisiana to recover from the freshwater incursion (they had to open up the gates in the river levee below New Orleans to help keep the oil out of the marshes, and this dropped the salinity levels in many of the oyster beds to the point where the oysters could not survive - they need brackish water to live, fresh water kills them). Gulf fish and Louisiana shrimp are available everywhere.
I exist in Chicago, but I live in New Orleans.

In laws were there a few weeks ago dropping their son off at Tulane. They said all the places had signs letting you know that all the seafood sold was checked ( whatever they do to check it) I would bet it alls safer now than ever to eat.
