Recently, I had the opportunity to tag along on my wife's business trip to LA. While she was working, I had the chance to spend some time with my son, who's an LA music producer, and visit a couple of his favorite food haunts.
For lunch, he suggested El Taurino, west of Downtown:
El Taurino is known for tacos el Pastor. We ate a bunch of them; they're quite small but exceptional, with loads of crunchy bits and a tangy salsa verde. The carne asada tacos were good, too, but not transcendental like the al Pastor. Rice and beans made a satisfying complement.
El Taurino is deceptively large. He tells me they're open well into the night and do a huge after-club business.
Dinner took us to Korea Town, and quite possibly the best Korean BBQ I've ever tasted:
As you can see, ambience is not a major consideration...
...but the food definitely is. Here's the pan chan:
Bulgogi and marinated shrimp. Notice the garlic cloves grilling:
Hardwood charcoal, which imparts a lovely, smoky aroma (to your clothing, as well).
Service was friendly, a welcome contrast to some similar places I've visited.
Next trip, we've decided to check out a few of the Asian restaurants that have gotten a lot of attention here lately.
