    This seems different enough to me to warrant a new topic but if the moderators choose to merge it with the Mexico City thread that's fine with me.

    We've been in Mexico (Morelia to be precise) for almost a year now. I just found out I will be going weekly to Mexico City for business starting in August. I love the great variety and quality of the Mexican food we have here but I am dying for something different. Mexico is not a nation of immigrants in the same way the US is (I just got my resident visa, after five months of beating my head against bureaucratic brick walls) but I hear that Mexico City has a variety of ethnic cuisines and I would love to take advantage. Does anyone have recommendations for good sushi or Chinese (of any variety) or Thai or (god willing) Korean? I'd kill for even some Skokie egg rolls and sweet and sour pork about now.

    This would be silly for people coming to Mexico City for a vacation, the staggering range of traditional and contemporary Mexican cuisine would of course be the focus for anyone on vacation. But I'm a transplanted American missing the range of different foods Chicago has to offer and looking for something to quell those longings. Can anyone help?

    I'm sorry, this has nothing to do with your post (good luck, by the way, I love chinese food in Peru, but I've never had it in Mexico city) but I am in possesion of a fact of trivia which I never get to share - there were actually chinese and japanese in Mexico in the 16th and early 17th century, quite a few of them. the spanish were mining mexican silver, and the biggest market in the world for silver was china, and the silver was used to buy luxury goods that Europeans wanted. the trade went mexican silver to china, chinese goods to mexico which were then shipped to Spain. among the people imported were japanese mercenaries to protect the silver mines. unfortunatly, that origional population died out or were diluted long before they had time to impact the culinary traditions of mexico

    Haven't been since 2008, but family friends are there, and they like the tapas scene very much, which we enjoyed as well. Current recs include:

    Jaleo
    Capicua
    Tierra de Vinos

    I really liked the Centro Castellano in the Camino Real in Polanco in about 2005, which has an amazing subterranean brick vault and woodburning oven. Tripadvisor doesn't think it's that hot lately, YMMV.

    Thanks for this. Will check them out. It's funny, there's an ambivalent relationship between Mexico and Spain, the Spanish look down not just on Mexico but all of latin america and Mexicans consider the Spanish to be snobbish jerks who screwed their country. I have found some leads to Middle East cuisine near the zocalo too.

    I've had some great meals at Shu, but it's expensive Japanese cuisuine. I'd say similar to Japonais in Chicago, only better.
