Has anyone tried Honey Bear Ham on Grand and Ogden? I was thinking about getting one for Mother's Day brunch, but I have never heard of anyone going there before. Thanks for your help.

Well, I decided to blaze the trail. I ordered from Honey Bear this weekend. The ham was good, but their whole business strategy is weird. I had such a hard time getting in touch with them or even figuring out if they are still open. They have very limited hours, no answering machine, and no website. They rely on people taking the chance on them and then coming back and telling their friends. They don't make the hams on site, so you must pre-order. They also have smoked turkey but that needs a whole week. I asked the guy what else they sell and he said "Baked beans and potato salad, but the potato salad people are out of town this week." And I asked, "how are your baked beans?" to which he answered, "they're alright." Well, just the ham for me.
The flavor and texture on the ham was good, it was a little thinly sliced, but that's how my mom likes it and she was the guest of honor anyway. They are very close to my house so I will probably continue to go there.

    GinaO,

Thanks for trying and writing this place up. We've been passing it for years and have long wondered about it -- I'm not sure I remember ever seeing any activity in the shop. Anyway, the mystery now seems to be pretty well cleared up.

By the way, what are the prices like?

Thanks for the report. You do wonder how some places stay in business.

There are probably people who get those things for events or parties over and over, and that's how they stay in business. I remember getting one once, it was good enough at first, but as Abraham Lincoln said, "There is nothing more like eternity than a train ride of eleven days, unless it's two people and a ham."
