    Hello fellow LTHers.
I'm delurking to inquire about where to find a delicious whipped cream birthday cake for my sweet mom's birthday. She has specifically requested one, but I can't seem to find a place that will do a whipped cream cake on the north side of Chicago. I've done a full search on the site and enjoyed Mike G's "season of cake" thread (gorgeous pics!). It seems that Swedish Bakery will do one, but they are closed on Sunday--the big day. I called Fox & Obel and they don't do whipped cream. I will be eternally grateful if anyone can help. I promise to report back with a review!

    Thanks a bunch.

    Hi,

My preference these days for whipped cream cakes is BomBom in Pilsen. I have been impressed with the desserts at House of Fine Chocolate on Broadway, though I don't know if they do a whipped cream frosting.

I no longer favor Lutz's, which was our whipped cream special occasion cake source for many years. The last two cakes just didn't fit the bill.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

BomBon is an excellent choice. Also, I've enjoyed whipped cream cakes from Dinkel's

Dinkel's it is! I just caught them after they closed, but I've made an order of a combo chocolate/vanilla cake with whipped cream frosting and a layer of fresh bananas and strawberries. Thanks Cathy2 and Michael. I'll report back with the results (and try to snap a picture, too.)

Your quick response was much appreciated.

Sorry it's taken so long to post this, but I've been attempting to post a picture to no avail. It's a little embarassing that I can't figure out how to do it, but I will keep trying.

I ordered my mom's whipped cream birthday cake from Dinkel's and the family seemed to enjoy it. So, the big secret here is that I'm not really a cake person. Pie is my poison, so I admit I'm not the finest judge--but I won't let that stop me.

First, the cake looked lovely (wish I could insert picture here  ). It was perfectly iced with sweet white whipped cream and I had ordered some sort of "nut crunch" topping that was on the side of the cake. It was sweet, but it wasn't just nuts. I don't want to ask too many questions here. For looks, it gets a 7.5 out of 10.

Cutting into the cake was a bit disappointing. The filling was sold to me as "fresh bananas and strawberries." There was one layer of fresh bananas ensconced in whipped cream--very nice. The strawberries, however, didn't taste very fresh and were in a heavy, syrup-y sauce. The cake was a little dry for my taste and didn't have the moist crumb I was expecting.

That said, my family gave numerous accolades for the cake and the birthday celebration was successful. If necessary, I'd try another bakery before I went back to Dinkel's, but it was certainly a more than acceptable cake.

    Thanks for the recommendations, LTHers!
