Watched and was fascinated by an Andrew Zimmern episode on Peranakan (Nonya) cuisine in Singapore. (For those who didn't see it/don't know: Peranakan (which means 'descendant') refers to the Chinese who settled in Indonesia about five hundred years ago and, in the case of the cuisine, it's about how the Chinese food absorbed and changed through the influence of the native Malay, Indian, and other communities. Take a look at this fascinating thread to get some helpful notions.)

So intrigued that I thought see whether cookbooks are available. I found, to my surprise, a number are out there, both in and out of print. My difficulty is that I have absolutely no way to assess them. I can't tell a truly worthless one from a gem. Can anyone point me in the right direction (or, wonder of wonders, recommend a specific book)?

    Many thanks.

Ten or twelve years ago I asked a Malaysian-born, Singapore-raised, food-obsessed friend his opinion of Malaysian cookbooks. He thought there was only a single one in English worth recommending: Makan-Lah! by Carol Selva Rajah. I managed to find a copy of the Australian-published book and enjoyed reading it and looking at the pictures but I have to confess I haven't cooked much from it. The 200 or so recipes cover the range of Malaysian cooking but a fair number are Nonya. Quite a few books have appeared since then and I wonder what my friend would think of them. Still, I feel fairly confident suggesting Makan-Lah! as one of the best of the older crop.

Here's a new edition of an old standard, originally written by the mother of Singapore's prime minister. The reviews square with what I knew about the original version.
