Chinatown is an excellent idea. It's a target rich environment and, as you say, very close to trains. I'm wondering if we can't do this whole journey on public transit...be nice, though not sure it's possible.

i was thinking the same thing. walking from the train stations could be good exercise and head clearing time. maybe we could make large chunks of the 24 hours trainable, even if not all. hopefully, it'll be warmer than 10 years ago. didn't it snow? it sure was cold, i remember. chinatown is on the greenline, i think. manny's is close to the train. so is argyle street. so is wicker park- maybe a lazo's vs. arturo's taco competition at 3 am?

It was cold the first time around, and we're doing it a little later in the month this time so maybe that will help.

Chinatown is on Red Line, as is Argyle.

Lawrence is pretty bad, though. There's also Red Hot Ranch, which has great fried shrimp and is open very late (I think 4:00 AM) and is near Arturos and Lazo's

If you're talking about Marzano's Miami Bowl at Archer & Pulaski, we're too late. It closed in 2004 and was torn down a year or two later.

Keep in mind La Barca closes early (6pm, as of a couple years ago). Do you mean Durango Western Wear (4136 W 26th)?

For hats (and hat maintenance) I'd recommend Mariano's Western Wear, an exceedingly cool old La Villita shop, a little east at 26th & Spaulding. I hope they're still open.

Mariano's looks wonderful - will have to stop in. Indeed, I was thinking of Durango. Both those and La Barca were a poke for Hat after the Delicias note rather than practical suggestions; I noticed the proximity the other day at Troha's and thought about what a thon that busy stretch would make on its own.

Looking like a genius plan. Note that Troha's is not eat-in (though they have a large back-of-house - special arrangement / tour, perhaps?), so you'd need to order and perhaps sweet-talk Delicias Mexicanas into letting you double up there; I can't remember a convenient park nearby, and that isn't a conducive sidewalk for hanging out, in my opinion.

I bet you'll spend less time on 26th than you expect, so you could easily add to Hyde Park (Jimmy's is brilliant, keep it): Ribs 'N Bibs for aquarium-smoked tips (limited counter seating) and famous Valois (cafeteria, spacious) are just up on 53rd. So is Rajun Cajun for Indian steam tray (seats 16), and the other places I really love are Cafe Corea (seats only about 12) and The Nile on East 55th (bigger) if those flavors are sought. Feel free to bring anything requiring more space and facilities to eat to Hutchinson Commons (or courtyard) at 57th and University, a comfy pit stop. [ignore the following madness: If it's not against the spirit of the 'thon, we / I could even probably get some That's-A-Burger or Uncle John's to Hutch for sharing at an appointed time.]

Or you could stop somewhere on 47th instead of adding to Hyde Park, or ditch the above entirely and just enjoy more time in La Villita (Los Gallos for CESJ?). Too much fun. I see the appeal of limiting to 24 in 24, though, so consider this merely a brainstorm / dump.

It's looking good, although I'd suggest PHB/Maria's earlier with Ed's after as Maria's gets more and more crowded as the evening wears on, and PHB occasionally runs out of the fish fry early in the evening. If needed, however, I could talk to both and make arrangements for our group.

There's a small park/mall at the blocked-off junction of Kolin (4350 W) and 26th, a few short blocks west of Troha's (4151 W). Probably not a bad place to scarf down some shrimps if the weather is good.

ursiform is right. why not put pleasant house right at 5pm when the fish fry starts? that way we are guaranteed food and more room to eat it at maria's.

also, the beautifully restored stearns quarry is very close to ed's, at 28th and halsted. we could take a lap around it. it'll be smart to have a nice break from eating and the quarry is awesome. (watch this youtube video)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhEJthwj53A

and i also think ronnie suburban's point about the berghoff should be noted. we should finish up at the berghoff at noon, not get started. i'm planning on doing the whole shebang, but i'm not crazy.....

Doing Pleasant House at 5PM seems a good suggestion, but I defer to the superior logistics brains of VI, ReneG and others who can figure out what sequence of places makes the most sense.

Lapping the quarry sounds good, you know, if we can pack a lunch or something.

I'd really hope we can keep Freddy's in the mix, as this will be my 10th anniversary of eating there. It would be cool if we could combine that part of the jaunt with a drink at Klas, which I believe (hope) is open on Fridays.

Me, I'd ditch the current Chinatown line-up, not the least, it seems we're quite heavy on Chinatown and on standards. I'd rather we go instead to one of the HK style places that have late night menus like Chi Cafe or even visit, which would make sense in a lot of ways, the food court.

I strongly suggest, and it's an odd remiss from the first voyage, that we get a Maxwell St. polish.

Shan AND a cabbie joint seem duplicative. I really like the idea of early AM carnitas at like Don Pedro or something like that in Pilsen instead.

Could we squeeze Marie's Pizza in as we should have some pizza (and then hit some of the other places around Lawrence/Kedzie?)

Perhaps a giant donut stuffed with ice cream late at night at Huck Finn?

And would not it make sense to get in line some time on Saturday for a donut at Do Rite or Donut Vault?

I could hope, maybe, we can be at Green City Market when it opens at 8 AM. Just because any celebration of food should celebrate where our food starts.

In the same vein, what about swinging by Butcher & Larder

Continuing the vein, one of our rash of new breweries/brew pubs would make sense. Maybe Haymarket (close to PQM?). A tour of someplace would be very good, if not a brewery, maybe Koval.

The Wooddlawn Tap section is missing the critical "get bbq" portion - Who's picking up from Uncle John's?

If we did have a jaunt to/near Johnnie's, I'd suggest we re-jaunt not too far from there to the newly re-furbished re-opened Caffe Italia for a pick-me-up. We can continue, of course, for Will Specials.

Lately, I'm just in love with Ann's Bakery & Deli in Ukie Village, and I wonder if we can sneak that in. We need something to represent the Eastern European heritage of our town, no?

Is Uncle Johnny's still open? I feel we need some form of old school Bridgeport to match the new. As I'm nearly the only one around here that likes Riccobenes, I don't think that'll work.

All good, but let's try to make sure we have public transit options nearby (and that during the dead zone of 2AM-5AM, that we have someplace to go that's not just killing time). I think there's value in grouping restos in same geographcial location (thus Chinatown).

    HI,

Affirming VI's comment above, I have been to Don Pedro in Pilsen at 5:00 AM after dropping off someone at Midway Airport. The staff is zipping around getting things set up. No lines and plenty of seating, making it a pretty good choice for an early morning stop.

Plus they have brain tacos, which can substitute for brains masala from the first run.

And Pilsen is west of Chinatown.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Just some initial thoughts:

How about the Diner Grill in the 5am slot?

Any possibility of paying our last respects at the Ramova Grill for a bowl of chili/mother-in-law?

Would you consider doing a Johnnie's/Gene n Judes 1-2 punch?

How about squeezing in a La Chapparita stop? Seems fairly mandatory to me.

How about Big Star for a decent taco for the 1AM slot instead of Arturo's (Arturo's staff often times start breaking out the ammonia-laced mops around then while you're eating. Plus, the food sucks  Did I say that? Out loud?)?

Johnnie's and GnJ pretty much requires a car (or hours on public transit), so I'm losing enthusiasm for that area.

    La Chapparita would be excellent.
