    **SEE THE NEW ITINERARY DOWNTHREAD**

I was supposed to run the Chicago Marathon this weekend. Instead, I'm going to head out for the second installment of my South Side food exploration. I welcome anyone to join me at any/all stops. :D

I can't start until 1pm, but below is the agenda I'm proposing for Sunday. As always, feel free to join me by whatever mode of transportation you prefer. Times on the agenda are tentative and depend on traffic. I'll route the the bike ride and add those directions to the South Side Sunday map today. My main considerations for this outing were: 1) the amount of food I think I can realistically eat in one afternoon (otherwise I'd add more stops) 2) I want to try the birria at Zaragoza relatively soon after my visit to La Barca 3) Zaragoza closes at 4pm. Please post here if you'd like to join me and/or have feedback on my plans.

wow that sounds fun, call me tentative (got in-laws this weekend), I'd probably meet you at the first stop rather than ride up to Swim then ride back down to 48th & Pulaski. Then again you never know.

A few updates for South Side Sunday--some good, some less good--courtesy of my doctor today. First, I have the flu. No one wants the flu but particularly not this one. Good news: I should be much improved in about 3 days and in all likelihood by Sunday.

Second, I am supposed to stay off my bike for a week. I messed up my arm in a spill last weekend, and apparently pulling and pushing on handlebars is not helping. Good news: South Side Sunday can be done with both bikes and cars (for anyone who wants to ride) or by cars alone. I need to finalize arrangements, but my plan is to make all scheduled stops by car. South Side Sunday will go on!

Oh boy, this sounds like a lot of fun. Sadly, Saturday is the Music Box Massacre and I don't plan on being home til 4am. But since I'd be driving too, I may meet you at some point. Call me tentative also. Will you be planning more of these south-side excursions? I don't get out there very often!

Yes, there will definitely be more South Side Saturdays and Sundays. This is my mission this fall! Please meet us if you can this weekend.

Have fun at the Music Box Massacre. I did that one year, and my toosh definitely would have been too sore to ride a bike after that. (Love the Music Box, but those chairs were not meant for 24-hour sitting.) Also, if you haven't done it before, beware: 24 hours in a theater full of people subsisting primarily on pizza...not a pleasant space to be in toward the end... :|

Those seats really need some updating for the ever expanding American ass. We never stay the full 24 hours (why bother if you're asleep, might as well be comfy at home) and you're right, by midnight the distinct scent of feet begins to arise. Hey, speaking of pizza, I wonder if ronnie_suburban's friend will be there...

South Side Sunday – Bigger and Better!

    Folks,

It’s looking like this mess of a flu I have is going to keep me from the South Side on Sunday. However, I have a bigger and better back-up plan for LTHers who are still interested in the outing.

PIGMON, my South Side food mentor, has very generously offered to take my place with a revised and I think much improved itinerary. This tour will take place by car (unless you’re biking or taking public transit to meet the group). Post here if you’ll be joining and if you need a ride, and I’ll make sure everyone who wants to join has transportation.

This line-up is truly stupendous. PIGMON has deep knowledge of the South Side, and this is basically my idea of a perfect Sunday. If you have any free time, I strongly recommend joining the group. This is a very special opportunity. I look forward to riding this tour as soon as I'm out of convalescence. :D

    New and Improved Itinerary
(NOTE: All times are approximate. If you post here that you will be joining the group, you’ll get PIGMON’s cell phone number so that you can get live updates on the group’s location on Sunday.)

    10:30am
For those who need a ride only
Meet PIGMON @ location TBD (PM me, if you ride with PIGMON you must be OK with cigars, if PIGMON's car fills up I will find other drivers to carpool)

    11:00am
    Garage tacos @ covert location
If you have your own transportation and will be meeting the group there, PM me for the location.

    12:30pm
Nicky’s for one (or a few) Big Babies
    Nicky’s
    6142 S Archer Ave
    Chicago IL 60638

    1:15pm
    Birria at Zaragoza
    Birrieria Zaragoza
    4852 S Pulaski Rd
    Chicago IL 60632
    773-523-3700

    2:15pm
Sonoran hotdog @ Delicias Mexicanas/ carne en su jugo @ Los Gallos/ street food on 26th St.
    Delicias Mexicanas
    4148 W 26th St
    Chicago IL 60623
    773-522-5009

    Los Gallos
    4211 W 26th St
    Chicago IL 60623
    773-762-7452

(If the group decides they don’t want to go to 26th St after birria, another option is to hit Los Gallos at 4252 S Archer as the last stop.)

I am interested in meeting up with the SSS crew en route sometime around Zaragoza, pending timing of post-marathon celebrations for my friend.

I will have my own car so I don't need a ride.

Can I suggest that a Happy-Stomachathon will not be a Happy Stomachathon without Happy Stomach. While I might join you at Zaragoza, why not postpone a week? Those goats ain't going anywhere. True, a Pigmonathon ain't so bad either.

Pigmon, if this is a go can you PM me your cell phone and perhaps the location of the garage taco (although I doubt that I will get there at 11).

Ohhhhhhhh how I wish I could make it for those covert tacos, but I too have a cold now and with the Massacre, I should really rest up instead so I don't have to ditch work on Monday. I really am disappointed in missing this, but I'll keep my eye out for upcoming happy_stomach-athons/Pigmonathons. Get well soon, h_s!

Man I'd really love to join PIGMON for the secret taco garage expedition but I forgot when I posted the other day that SaintPizza's parents are visiting this weekend, and while I think they'd love that kind of thing, it's not going to work out for tomorrow.

    happy_stomach, get better soon!

Oh, bummer. It looks like we're going to cancel South Side Sunday since the group has somewhat come apart.

Given how much South Side exploration I want to get done this fall, the time I have to ride is very limited, so I need to spend less time messing around in Google Maps and just get out on the road and start hitting places, which I hope to do, health-pending, next Saturday. So, I probably won't organize anything officially, but anyone interested in joining me (and winging it) can call me. :)

    Get well soon.

If you want company, you might consider giving a starting point and a list of potential stops. That will make the decision easier. I might have to go to Beverly again next Saturday, so I might be available.

If you are considering which stops to include in one of your South Side explorations, I was very interested in this when you first posted about it as a possibility for your South Side Saturday on 10/3 and then put it on the original itinerary for 10/11 (I didn't sign up because Sunday evenings are generally bad for me):

    >>happy_stomach: (BTW, you can ignore Mandarin Kitchen on my map, which is a long-shot possibility for hot pot adventure if somehow I have stomach room after a hot dog, birria, ceviche and chili.)<<

I don't know how this would fit into a day with all the other food attractions, but I'd be up for a hot pot adventure on one of your trips!

So by "next Saturday," are we now speaking of Oct. 17? I'll be doing an author's event at the Beverly Library, so I decided that, before I need to show up at the library, I'm going the long way around and making my first visit to Calumet Fisheries. I'll be hitting it right after the Culinary Historians meeting, so between 12:30 and 1. So depending on when you're down there, maybe I'll see you. If not, have a great ride and dine. I'll look forward to learning of your exploits.

    Cynthia,

What do you have planned for the Beverly Library? Something about food? They don't have anything listed on their website except a class on Green Parenting at 11 am.

Really? That's a bit disconcerting. There is supposed to be a "Meet the Authors" event at 2:30-4:30, sponsored by the Chicago Writers Association. I think the CWA sent the press release about the event to all the papers. Hope we're not a surprise to the library!
