There are so few pie shops that you can sit comfortably and have a slice. This really sticks in my craw. Therefore, I'm rebooting the Plethora of Pie event with a badass south side twist and some good chow to match. I'd like to meet at 12 noon on Sunday, August 7th, in honor of Braham Pie Day.

If I can manage it, I will try to get a hold of a Supreme Bean Pie. I think this would be best divvied up and taken home since we'll have plenty to eat on this trip. Perhaps everyone can bring a bit of tupperware?

    1st Stop
Café Trinidad for a light lunch and peach cobbler.
    557 E. 75th Street

    2nd Stop
Medici on 57th for pie and coffee. (Pies available: Vaguely Reminiscent, Pecan, Apple)
    1327 E. 57th Street

    3rd Stop
Miss Lee's Good Food for pie and possibly some soul food. (Pies available: Lemon Ice Box, Buttermilk, Sweet Potato and Peach, Apple, and Sweet Potato Cobbler.)
    203 E Garfield Blvd.

If we still have any energy, we can head over to Village Foods at 1521 E. Hyde Park Blvd (after the 2nd or 3rd stops) for a bean pie.

Those interested, please let me know and I'll add your name to the list!

    Attendees

    HI,

It is my plan to attend. What may sideline me is a family event with no date yet determined.

Didn't Army and Lou's close a few months ago?

    You might want to consider:

    Brown Sugar Bakery
    328 E. 75th St.
    phone: 773/224-6262 (RIGHT)
    Stephanie Hart, owner

Across the street from Lem's, features caramel cake, red velvet cake and sweet potato pie.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Not that I know of. If so, we can do the bakery or Miss Lee's Good Food, but I don't know if we can eat inside. Maybe we should add Lem's too, just 'cuz!

    HI,

    There is also:

    Pearl's Place
    3901 S. Michigan
    773-285-1700

According to Ann Fisher, a very, very good peach cobbler.

There was an article in the Trib after Army and Lou's closed. Rene G check on this as well. If you call the phone number, it is disconnected.

    Army & Lou's (closed)
    422 E 75th St
    Chicago
    773-483-3100

Sorry, I wish the news were different.

I don't think Brown Sugar is open on Sunday.

No eating allowed in Ms Lee's. There's even a big sign on the door saying so.

Keep in mind Lem's doesn't open until 2pm.

Might be further "south" than you want to travel but this place is supposed to be really good--haven't been in yet because I thought they were closed but apparently, they just did some retooling.

Pie Piper Cafe (formerly Scarborough Faire)
    12 West Joliet Street
    Schererville, IN 46375-1416
    (219) 865-4660
    http://www.scarboroughfairecafe.com/

    LUNCH
    Monday-Friday
    11am - 4:00pm

It used to be called Scarbourough Faire and is now The Pie Piper Cafe but it's the same owners. It's in what looks like a an old southern house and they offer a large selection of sweet and savory pies. I've passed this place easily a 100 times and always wondered what the story was. Then I saw the new sign a couple of weeks ago and this post made me call to figure out what was going on. 10-12 different varieties of sweet and savory pies on any given day--hoosier, chocolate chess, pineapple, "pizza" pie, pot pies, etc. And they have a full menu of other lunch items. Reviews appear to be good. I'm looking forward to checking it out and plan to next week when my pie-eating companion is back from his trip to CA.

If not for this trip, then at least Pie Lady will know of a place to go for pie, even if it's not in Chicago!

I forgot about this place! What do my attendees think about changing the date to August 6th, Saturday? If that doesn't work for everybody, we won't do it, so please be honest. I'd rather have all my peeps than this particular pie. Or I can always call Jimmy Jamm's and see if they can make an exception and open on Sunday for an hour or two.

Okay, so I was wrong about no pie places...but still, one! One freakin' pie shop and it's way the hell down there!

Wish I had the dough to start a biz like that. I don't think we can make it such a long distance with other places on the list, but as for me, one of these days I'll make myself a Horseshoe and Pie Piper trip!

I have, but it's so tight in there, especially when there's a rush. I sat in the table by the mirror and there's always someone either coming in behind you or waiting to pay.

It was busy when we were there, a sunny Saturday afternoon, but I think the size of our group permitted me to not notice the customers. Of course, I was at the table in the window. I've also had that table on a sunny Friday afternoon with a couple of folks. Great way to while away some time.

Maybe you can pick up a Supreme Bean Pie at the Nation of Islam's headquarters, 73rd & Stony. You might also find them being sold on the street (delivered to your car window by a young man wearing a suit) at the intersection of Stony/79th/South Chicago. Or you can almost always find bean pies (from a different bakery) at Village Foods, corner of Hyde Park & Lake Park.

Cafe Trinidad is indeed open on Sunday. I called just now to make sure and they're open from 12-7.

I also just wrote to the Nation of Islam about obtaining a bean pie. If they don't write me back by Monday I'll call them. Wouldn't that be great if I could get one of those? It's only 1.5 miles away from Cafe Trinidad. We can find a nice park for that, or we can all bring tupperware to bring our shares home (it doesn't appear to need refrigeration).

As for having not many choices on Sunday, I kind of did that on purpose. The last Plethora had to be cancelled and the one before that had a low LTH turnout, so that would be a lot of pie to eat. But there seems to be a lot of choices, so we can always have a 3rd installment soon!

Oops, sorry, I don't know where I read (or more likely misread) that it's closed on Sunday.

My understanding is that Supreme Bean Pies are baked in the kitchens at Muhammad University on the NOI campus just north of the big mosque. MU is easily seen from Stony and I think there's a parking lot right in front. I have no idea if they welcome walk-in pie purchasers or what their hours might be. If you find out anything, please let us know. The black-suited pie sellers may be roaming around 79th & Stony on weekends but of course that's not certain.

You won't find a nicer park in the vicinity than the South Shore Cultural Center, entrance at 71st & South Shore.

For what it's worth, the Supreme Bean Pie label says "keep refrigerated" but I suspect you'll survive after eating one kept in a car for a few hours. The bean pies sold at the supermarket are simply left out on a table.

I just updated the route. It's a total of 4.9 miles. Tell your friends!

From Cafe Trinidad to Medici's, it is 3.2 miles; possibly a little far to walk. But from Medici's to Miss Lee's, I'd love to walk if that's okay with everyone and it's not too hot out. Is Miss Lee's still considered in the vicinity of the University?

To get to Ms. Lee's you are crossing Washington Park, then walking along Garfield Boulevard.

I will not walk this route, I will drive over and wait.
