Montrose beach BBQ 2015 #6 [BORDER US/MEX] 8/8/15

The theme for this one is "BORDER (U.S./mexico)". Many options here, obvious and not so obvious. Of course there is tex-mex and northern Mexican, but you can get deep here with all of the cultural influences. Baja-Med
or get into the Chinese, Mennonites, Mormons, and crypto-Jewish cuisines.
I'd even accept Tex-Mex in houston specific.



Prior years, newcomers from time to time get lost trying to find the spot. It is just north of montrose beach, but that doesn't mean it's on montrose, and it's not exactly on the beach either. It is actually just a little north of Lawrence Ave. Please look at the map and answers to other questions here:

Ideas we've got for what to bring (nothing settled yet):
* Dutch Oven Mexican Lasagna (a Boy Scout classic: layered meat, cheese, tortillas, salsa)
* Flan
* Horchata
* Queso Fundido
* Churros (not sure how we'd deep fry, but it's not impossible)

I'm still undecided, as odd as it sounds, this cuisine is more foreign to me than most... still reading and researching a lot.

I'm still not walking very well, but I'll be there. I'm going to make Esquites, a salad version of elotes. Growing up my best friends family was from New Mexico and I was lucky enough to visit often, sopaipillas were my favorite sweet treat, but they're too difficult to make for this picnic.
