So, I hvae a homebrew kegerator using old Cornelius kegs that used to hold 5 gallons of Pepsi syrup. It holds 4 x 5 gallon kegs.

We have an overflow of tequila in the bar so I have been considering making a 5 gallon keg of margaritas. Normally we make them with fresh squeezed lime but the thought of making enough for 5 gallons is daunting.

Any thoughts about a mix/recipie that would be good on a large scale and not cost a fortune?

I thought I have seen buckets of powder margarita mix at CostCo. Is this any good if I am indeed correct? Hate to make 5 gallons of crap!

Jamieson22 - two of my professional colleagues have a tried and true "in the freezer" margartia recipe and I wonder if it might work in your kegerator. How cold can the kegerator get? The recipe is very simple and the end product really very good:

1 tube thawed frozen limeade - any brand
1 tube thawed frozen lemonade - any brand
1 tube (now emptied of lemonade) your favorite tequila
    1/4 tube triple sec

Mix together well and place in a 1-gallon ice cream container in freezer with lid on until congealing into slushy wonderfulness.

Thought this might be a more inexpensive option...

Well the kegerator could get cold enough as it is a chest freezer using an external temp control module, but if the margaritas were slushy, that woudl mean my beer would be slushy too ;) Though limeade may be a good way to "spruce up" a bulk mix.

    Thanks for the idea!

Now here's a topic I like! My new favorite 'rita recipe is both easy and cheap, given that limes are 15 for a buck at Rogers Park Fruit Market. My batch makes a blenderful, but seems pretty easy to multiply...you'd just be running the blender a lot.

    7 limes, quartered
4 cups water (or fill your blender bowl)
    1/2 c sugar

Dump everything in the blender, and blend for 10-15 seconds. Strain into a pitcher. Chill. Voila!

No more juicing limes, the oils in the zest turn up the volume a bit, and I like the refreshing slight bite at the end from a hint of rind. Sometimes I toss in some strawberries, or peaches, mangos...think I'll go pour myself a 'rita now, from the pitcher in the fridge.

Good luck, and let me know if you need help consuming your copious amount of tequila goodness.

    Jenn,

That lime juicing technique sounds solid, but I have a feeling there is at least one key ingredient missing from your margarita recipe. Tequila? Also, do you use any orange juice or liqueur?

    Thanks,

    Kennyz:

So which method did you go with for your bulk margarita project? I have been assigned a similar one for this upcoming weekend. I'm leaning toward the whole (quartered) lime technique... seems simpler.

I couldn't find the powdered mix I thought I had seen at CostCo, and everything else seemed like it would cost me a fourtune to produce 5 gallons. So i just decided to ferment a hard cider instead ;)
