There have been some mentions on this site about Vien Dong, a Vietnamese restaurant near Clark and Belmont that I enjoyed in my neighborhood.

Hubby and I were excited about heading over there for dinner tonight, but ended up being deflated by a dark space and sign indicating that some Indian place is going to open up there.

Fortunately Hai Yen #2, now open near Diversey and Clark provides another option:

    But, I'll miss Vien Dong.

That's a shame. I work near there and would eat lunch there a couple of times per month. Their pho hit the spot when I got the craving, as well as their bun. They didn't have the tendon or tripe option with the pho but that was to be expected for the 'hood. Other than that, they served up a great bowl of pho.

This indeed stinks (I wanted to use a stronger word here but keep the GA rating). While the new Hai Yen is decent (I'm slowly working on a write up for them as they are about 10 doors down from me at work) it is truely not the same. Vien Dong was chow spot that was a real taste of Argyle and Broadway in Boystown/Wriglyville. Hai Yen #2 is a psuedo-upscale higher priced resturant that looks like a West Loop condo. Nothing wrong with it, in fact the food is pretty good and it's killer to be able to get a passable bowl of Pho with a walk so short I don't need a a jacket even when the weather is like this (high of 22F). Still I am truely sad that Vien Dong is gone. I just hope the Indian place that goes in is good as it would be about a 5 min shorter walk than to Hema's #2.
