Has anyone eaten at this 24hr Indian Restaurant? It's at 903 North Halsted. My Indian friend at work swears by it. I think I need to give it a whirl

if i remember correctly, i was there with a friend, and we split around five dishes, each one was impressive. three veggie and two meat, and a couple of different breads. i can be too descriptive, sorry about that it was a while back, but it was a solid meal and very reasonable.

I'm going to be stopping by this place soon to try it out. I'm wondering has anyone else has eaten here? It's 24 hours, it's Halal (which usually means good quality meats right?) And the price must be right if cabbies eat there. No opinions from the forum crew? I'll be sure to report back soon.

I ate there once over a year ago. Yes, it's 24 hour, the meat seems fine and it's cheap. I wasn't impressed with the naan but my main dish was decent. After I ordered I noticed some of the kebabs looked really good. I look forward to your report.

Halal refers to food that is permissible according to Islamic law.

I guess it doesn't have to be of superior quality to begin with, but it's been my experience that it usually is. Generally having stronger flavors and not being fed hormones, and so on. I also just take it as a sign that they care about quality in one way or another.

Unfortunately, I have nothing good to report on. I tried a few dishes, all of which were at best average. The best thing I had was Chicken Biryani which wasn't good, just edible. The goat dish was mostly goat bones. (where did the meat go?) I guess being halal certainly doesn't mean good quality.

So I had been passing this place going up and down Halsted for a long time. I was always curious about it for a couple reasons. First of all, it's weird place for a restaurant, right in the middle of an industrial corridor. Secondly, for the longest time I thought it was a Chinese takeout place judging by the name. Actually as you guys already knew it's an Indian / Pakistani cabbie joint as can be seen by the long line of cabs illegally parked out in front.

I immediately liked it because the space reminded me of the little improvised restaurants you see in Asian countries. Like the places where the dining room is just off the sidewalk and there's a room in the back where the owners live. So I felt quite at home but there's no getting around it, this place is pretty damn dirty. You gotta have a high tolerance for sticky counters and so on, like these guys do:

I'm not gonna say this was the best biryani I ever had. But I would say it was a very solid second tier biryani. What was noteworthy here, was the sheer massive amount of food they give you. When I saw the huge pile of rice and chicken on the plate my eyes popped out like Wile E Coyote. Like this was a good 2 1/2 pound serving size, with at least two chicken thighs in there. I think this would have been a good meal for three regular people, for $8.

So it's not the greatest Indian food in the city, but it's solid and the price is right. It was good enough that I would come back and try the frontier chicken as suggested by the cabbies at the next table.

I tried it a couple of times (last time was probably a year ago) and didn't find it worth going back to. Tabaq is not that much farther, of the same genre, and much much better.
