ReneG and I were in a grocery store in NW Indiana to buy locally produced potato chips. While we didn't find the chips, a walk-about of the store located a new local product: Windy City Soda. The only flavor available now is Root Beer and Diet Root Beer, though they promise more in 2007 and seek your suggestions.

From the shape of the bottle and label it appears to be produced by Filbert's pop shop. I recall Gale Gand may be having her root beer produced at Filbert's, also. While I never tried hers, I do recall it didn't strike a favorable cord with people here.

My singular tasting of Windy City Soda is quite favorable, though I hope someone with more elevated sensitivity to root beer will eventually chime in.

Interestingly enough, I just tried my first Gale's Root Beer not more than 45 minutes ago at Southport Grocery. I found the root beer notes to be somewhat overwhelmed by the added vanilla and ginger. It wasn't as sweet as some root beers that I have had, but it didn't have the full on root beer taste that I like, either.

    HI,

IN the Windy City root beer, the first thing you breathe in is vanilla, though it is no overwhelming ginger presence.

I found Gail's ginger to be a bit off putting in a root beer.

    Peerless, I'd assume.

Though I haven't had them in
years, I keep them in my mind
    as the yardstick to measure
    others by.

    They are so perfectly potato-y,
with a crunch not found in most
of the too-tough chips out there.

Peerless, indeed, though not found on this occasion. The only time we bumped into Peerless Chips was at Tennessee Meats store, then only in snack bag portions. We didn't buy it because we wanted the larger size. Rene G did point out Chicago area is very competitive for snacks. Independent producers have a high bar to hurdle to get shelf space.

I should check Woodman's next time I am there for Peerless. They have had Ole Salty potato chips from Rockford, though I haven't found them in the last 6 months.

    HI,

Windy City is scheduled to be in Dominick's by the end of the month. They now have a distributor to get them all over Illinois.

    Hi,

It appears Windy City Soda lives on in memory only. They appear to have closed.
