Okay-here's a tough one. Need a spot for a Saturday night(12/30) dinner for 5 people. The place: must have booze; must allow 17 year olds(unlike Hopleaf, for eg.); must be in the city; must offer somethings that aren't too adventuresome(no Korean, Indian) but still interesting; must have a little "edginess" in some form. Last year's event took place at West Town Tavern-which fit the bill-the edginess came (almost) from the neighborhood.
The people aren't foodies, but enjoy good food as long as it's not too exotic, and appreciate some funkiness in atmosphere/surroundings.
I'm thinking Kuma's Corner if they allow minors. For some reason German places come to mind. Mirabell's for Old World funkiness-or even Brauhaus for a David Lynch-like experience. (That band thing) I'm not totally happy with these ideas.
I pretty much feel I know the city upside-down, but some place has got to be lurking outside my immediate radar. (the old Star Top Cafe used to be perfect for this type of thing.)

Kuma's Corner does allow minors--on my last visit there, there was a baby in a high-chair, so...

Is Pilsen too far to go? Nuevo Leon has been a crowdpleaser to the out of town guests I've brought.

How about Cafe Iberico? (there might be a bit of a wait)

What about Tomboy? I guess I'm not totally sure what you mean by "edgy", but they always have funky artwork up on the walls, and they're right on a fun (if congested) stretch of Clark. The food is good, IMO, and nothing that would scare anyone.

Almost hate to recommend Frontera Grill because I think it was in my last recommendation to someone. I like the place though.

You may want to check out Bite at 1035 N. Western, conveniently located next to the Empty Bottle. I followed Donna Knezek there when she left Leo's Lunchroom (and is now the proprietor of Feed) and always liked the place. The menu ranges from burgers to much fancier things and I am fairly certain that it is still BYOB (with liquor available next door at the Empty Bottle). Best of luck.

probably any of jerry kleiner's places would fit the bill, especially marche or opera.

Mas might be good--somewhat hip, exotic without being too "wierd". Plus really good cocktails for those who are drinking age.

How about Carnivale or Erwin. Carnivale is much edgier than Erwin. But, saying that something is edgier than Erwin isn't saying much at all.

    Thanks Will,
Erwin's is always a safe bet for a good meal, and Carnivale is as flashy as they come. As you noted, Erwin would lack the funk factor, and for me, Carnivale's food isn't totally up to snuff. Maybe I could get the two to merge into one entity for that night. (Sorry-musta been a flashback.) Anyway, you reminded me-I need to get back to Erwin's before too long.
