I've been trying for several weeks to get a few books -- a cookbook, a food atlas, and the book with Antonius's paper -- from Amazon, and I keep getting a message that there is a temporary problem that they are working on and expect to have resolved shortly. Has anyone had any success in the last few weeks buying stuff from Amazon? I've been trying for three weeks now.

That's weird. Did you use their calling service? My family and I have placed several orders in recent weeks especially since we have Prime.

I bought all my Christmas presents from Amazon this year -- all were bought within the last two weeks -- i had zero problems.

I also am a Prime member but doesn't that just concern shipping? i can't imagine that it would have any effect on your actual ordering process.

I got The Streets and San Man's Guide to Chicago Eats about two weeks ago. It seemed to take a little longer to get to me than usual.

It could be that they were overloaded with holiday orders...?

No, I'm just stating that as a Prime member, we were able to procrastinate  when we placed our later orders and did not have any hiccups. Then again, when I tried to track a package, it never seemed to make any progress beyond sending the billing info to UPS. When the package arrived on time, I noticed that they changed the tracking number on the package, but not in the email or order status.

A few experiences in which I ordered an Amazon item listed as available in "4 to 6 weeks" have convinced me that when Amazon says an item is available in "4 to 6 weeks," they mean never. It's their little euphemism--whether they know it or not. (They might be in denial about it.)

    That's a small quibble--in general, I'm an Amazonophile.

My only other quibble was they promised to ship the Sinatra:Vegas box set on the day of release, and they didn't; unaccountably, it took them till about 5 days later to ship it. By which time I'd already acquired one elsewhere, because I had to. Because, come on, Sinatra:Vegas.

Ordered a bunch of stuff lately and no (real) problems. One item came late because it would have gone through Denver except for a few snowflakes. To their credit, they comped the shipping. They did offer to send a new copy express but I said I'd wait. Everything else came as ordered.

As another poster suggested, they have this new service (or at least it's new to me) where you can type in your telephone number and have them call you instantly (literally, my phone began to ring about two seconds after I hit the Enter key) or later. The woman I spoke to was most gracious--and this was only about four days before Christmas. Worth a try.

    And good luck!
