What's Opening In The Old Sports Authority In Niles?

The Sports Authority in Niles on Milwaukee just north of Dempster has been closed for a couple of years. As I was driving by yesterday I noticed a sign in Korean. I was just wondering if anyone heard about this? Maybe competition for Super H Mart. (Nothing was in English so I really have no idea what it is.)

I have it on good authority from a friend with close ties to the Asian community that in fact the Sports Authority location will be a second Super H Mart! This of course raises the obvious question about the two locations being so close that they might cannibalize each other's business.

Just to add to the concern, this same friend was informed that a third Super H Mart will open in the old Cub Foods location across from the Village Crossing mall in Skokie.

One has to wonder if there is enough of an Asian population, along with crossover shoppers, to support three stores in such close proximity. I assume the owners have done their research and know that there will be enough business to make three stores survive.

When Chicago Food's location burned down at Pulaski and Petersen a few years ago. There were rumors they were going to rebuild the site as an Asian-oriented mall, which H-Mart is on a small scale. Instead all that has been erected was a steel building probably used as a warehouse.

You do have to wonder how the Asian business community will eventually respond to H-Mart. In some cases the old guard is going to have to reinvent itself to retain and attract new customers. It should be exciting times for us.

Even though the sign is in Korean it looks different than Super H. I think it has a little girl and an exclamation mark if I remember correctly.
