Not trying to beat a dead horse - saw the other threads on Indian Spices
which helped me generate a shopping list and make my first trek to A-1 Indian Grocers on 66th and Cass in Lemont or Downers Grove or wherever it was yesterday. Also stumbled across the "home economist" place yesterday too - not as thrilling as I wanted it to be, HOWEVER -

I was absolutely ENTHRALLED by the A-1 Indian Grocer. Never been to an Indian Grocery before as I have been only recently dabbling in Indian cookery. My question: Anyone know of any DECENT Indian Grocery stores
in the NEAR west burbs? Not interested in Devon. I can ask around and search for a good grocery there - or just wonder around on Devon. I am specifically looking for a place in the near west burbs, where I can pop in on my way home from work, and grab some fresh flatbreads for a dinner concoction, or maybe some samosas, or curry leaves etc.

Yes, I can look this up on the web, but I hate driving to find a place, and finding out that it's a dump with NO relevance to what I am seeking.

P.S. As I expected, I'll no longer be getting my Indian spices from Penzey's, but their few blends were a solid (and as expected - way overpriced) introduction to Indian cooking.

Lombard boasts a growing Muslim community; there's a large mosque in Glen Ellyn and Lombard housing is less expensive than Glen Ellyn.

Try shopping on Roosevelt Rd for Indo-Pak ingredients. Two places come to mind, Mediterranean Market and Al Wahid. I'm sure there are others along that stretch.

    Diannie -

Exactly what I was looking for (judging by website.) Much closer than Downer's Grove, too. Thanks a TON!

In Downers Grove there's also Bombay Bazaar - next to a branch of Sher-e-Punjab. The grocery store is decent, though depending on what you are getting keep an eye out for the expiration date on the package.

A1 grocer is indeed an excellent grocery store. Sadly (for me) I only went there shortly before leaving Chicago and didn't manage a return trip. I will note that it is quite different from (most) other Indian stores in that it caters to a South Indian (more specifically Kerala) and also Sri Lankan clientele.

Just a follow up. Went to Al wahid last night. The pictures on their website are obviously from a different grocery store. They had a few things on the shelf, but it was nowhere even remotely close to what the pics on the website looked like. The Indian grocer across the street and a block or so west had a MUCH bigger selection of everything.

There are a couple of Indian groceries on Cass Avenue in the same plaza as Katy's and also Shree. I have been there but can't vouch for how good they are.
