Yes, the yellow one's with the chocolate features. Who has the best smiley face (or similar) cookies?

I'm recently on a Deerfield's cookie kick and I know Deerfield's isn't popular among this forum so I wanted to pose the question.

Personally I miss Country Maid's smiley face cookies and the one's I find throughout various deli's just have no substance.

Oh, if only they had Eat n Park (popular in Pennsylvania) in Chicago. I loved their smiley face cookies... :D

My history of the happy smiley faced cookies is at the Kirschbaum's bakery in Western Springs, where I grew up. I still love these cookies. They sell them all the time, and I sometimes pick up the jumbo ones and get a message written on them for bdays and other fun occassions.

This is a complete old fashioned bakery with very reasonable prices on most items. The stuff doesn't sit around. Best to get there early, for a good selection.

I think Bennison's in Evanston has these cookies. I am not 100% sure as it has been a very long time, but I may have seen them at the Swedish Bakery in Andersonville as well. I do like these cookies too - they remind me of my childhood. However, the bakeries who had these cookies are all defunct.

Not sure why it wasn't posted for all to see. That's closer to home than the other suggestions so far, so I may have to give it a try.

I don't know if it just the nostalgia speaking, but when I saw the subject of this post, I was going to chime in that I've never had one that matched the ones I grew up at Countrymaid.

I've found the ones at Max's Deli on Skokie Hwy. in Highland Park to be decent and I actually think the ones at White Hen aren't half bad, either.

I agree. I've had both and both are enjoyable. But they're not quite the same as the ones you get fresh from a bakery.

I was just at Dinkel's yesterday after having breakfast at Wishbone with some friends...

They had two trays of smiley face cookies behind the counter.

I can't speak to how good they are but the other cookies we bought were really tasty!

Village Bakery in Lansing had great smiley face cookies. I haven't had one in years but remember them as tender and cake-like.

    Hi,

How are Smiley Face cookies different from Black and Whites? Are the essentially the same cookie with different decorative details?

    Thanks!

    Regards,

To me, smiley face cookies are sugar or butter cookies iced with a slightly lemon flavored yellow royal icing. Black and white cookies are more a cookie shaped cake, frosted with chocolate and vanilla frosting.

    Rudy's Bakery in Roscoe Village.

EXACTLY as I remembered them as a kid up north in Waukegan.

This place is SOOOO great and old school. I'm afraid they are going to get pushed out of the neighborhood one day due to the growth of the area, I sure hope not!

I have no idea if they are good, but they have them at The Bagel on Broadway in Lakeview (3000 or so North).

Smiley face are very different than black and whites. A sugar cookie vs a cakey thing. Smiley face are better to my mind.

Nowhere near Deerfield, but Oak Park Bakery carries them.
