In the city, I like Krasny's for small items and friendly service. If you've got a business license, Restaurant Depot has very good prices. I finally made it to Northwest Cutlery for a new santuko and butcher knife, a fun place with knowledgable staff. The santuko was a bit less than what Williams-Sonoma was charging, plus you're supporting a local business.
I can't recommend Schweppe's in Lombard. They have a huge selection, but I tried to return 2 half pans for a steam table that we hadn't used, and an employee accused me of lying and would only refund my money for 1 of the pans. She said they "looked used". Huh? Well, nice going lady, I just started a catering biz and Schweppe's will never get another dime. All that over a $20 pan.
Online, this place has good prices but the shipping tends to make it about the same as Restaurant Deport:
