Gilly's Andersonville

Has anyone eaten there? I live in the neighborhood and I cannot remember seeing anyone eating there.

I live in the neighborhood as well and have never seen anyone eating there. I think the place looks extremely unwelcoming. The paper signs in the windows are awful, the interior looks barren, and while they appear to have spent a great deal of money on the gigantic sign on Clark, there are no window treatments and barely anything on the walls. It also looks like a very large space. I was so excited when I saw that a restaurant was opening in that space but have no desire to go there until I hear some positive reviews or see some life in the place.

As general interest to LTHForum why don't you give us a little information on Gilly's such as type of food and address.

I don't have the street number but it's at the southeast corner of Bryn Mawr and Clark. The sign states they are open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and I'm guessing that it's diner food.

I drive by this place all the time. It's on the corner of Clark & Bryn Mawr. One of the problems with this place is that it's hard to tell what kind of food they serve. There's a coffee cup graphic on their sign. There are ketchup bottles on the table along with S&P, etc. So, my guess is that is is a diner?

I, too, was excited to see that a restaurant was coming into that space but then was really disappointed to see that the proprietor of this place seems to be a bit clueless in marketing this place.

Next time I drive by I'll try to at least stop & see if they have a menu posted in the window.

I have walked past it couple of times on my way to the Salvation Army (across the street). Menu appears to be diner like but if I recall correctly, on the pricey side. I remember seeing prices in the 12.00 range for breakfast. The times that I walked by I saw a couple of familes and couples. I don't know - I have strong opinons on what my neighborhood needs and it's not another restaurant. Again, IMO

I've seen people eating breakfast there but otherwise it's been empty when I've driven by (fairly frequently). The bizarre paper menu in the window appears to be the product of a dot matrix printer or one running out of ink. As I recall the breakfast and lunch menu featured diner-like offerings but the dinner menu was attempting more upscale offerings or at least more upscale pricing, in the $12-$20 entree range. I was put off by the menu, which suggested an inattention to detail and/or willingness to cut corners that I worry would also show up in other areas of the operation. And the interior isn't commensurate with restaurants in their dinner entree price range. It all gave me an uneasy feeling that made me reluctant to try it. If I did, it would only be for breakfast (and it's hard to imagine choosing it over Tweet, M.Henry, Svea, Pauline's, etc.).

A friend & I had breafast there a couple of Sundays ago. My friend is easy to please and enjoyed her egg, bacon and potato meal. She asked for a pancake instead of toast and was informed there would be an extra charge ($1!!). I had French toast (OK) and ordered well done bacon (not well done and extremely greasy and salty). The egg dishes I observed at other tables looked appetizing.

I felt the menu offered nothing special or original. The place itself was oddly (although kind of enjoyably) spacious. Not especially friendly.

I would say that Augie's down the street offers better coffee shop food at more reasonable prices. Too bad. But at least there is no waiting!
