I fear I may be heading into a culinary wasteland-- 3 days and nights in LaCrosse, WI. On-line searches have turned up the following recommendations:

-- Carlos O'Kelly's Mexican-Irish Cafe (corn beef and cabbage burritos)
-- Elite Mediterranean Cuisine (with weekend belly dancers)
    -- Hooters
-- Buzzard Billy's Starlite Lounge, featuring House Specialties:
      Crayfish Fettucine Alfredeaux
      Eggplant Seafood Pirogue

-- Thirty different places in which the entire left page of the menu is deep-fried something or other.
    -- Piggy's ("better than Applebee's!")

We'll be having a dinner meeting with about eight. Is there anything within 20 miles worth trying? Is our smartest move just to go to a nearby Culver's?

My cousin lives in LaCrosse so visiting there usually means drinks on their houseboat and dinner on their deck, but sometimes we dine out and it's usually to The Freighthouse.

    Alfonso,

There is NO bad eating in Wisconsin (or I find it hard to believe that you will not find good things to eat). I've passed through LaCrosse but never eaten there. I know there is a BBQ place that has gathered accolates but I also think there's a poor review of it on this board. The book I have with its name is in my car. I'll get it later and ammend my post.

In the meantime, if you have the desire to travel, you would really enjoy Native Bay which is just north of Chippewa Falls, about 2 hours from LaCrosse. It's a very Slow Food kinda place. Pictures from my visit can be found here

We always liked Piggy's. Big giant hog grogs with multiple straws for sharing.

Well, Piggy's was the BBQ place I was thinking about...
