Just enjoyed my first visit to this Hyde Park legend.

Had an excellent Reuben, navy bean soup and homemade cole slaw.

Guess my wife will be making me sleep in the guest room tonight!

Ever read Slim's Table, a book (as I recall) about African-American spontaneous communties, some of which takes place at Valois? At one point, I believe I'd heard that Spike Lee had optioned it for a movie.

I eat at the Valois pretty regularly, but haven't had their sandwiches. Have to do that next time. My 4-year-old son calls Valois "My Restaurant" because they serve his favorite 3 foods -- chicken (usually moist Greek baked), mashed potatoes, and pie (cherry or pumpkin). He's always so happy to eat these, we can usually get him to consume green beans or broccoli. No other place has that effect on him. Last time we went, he even decided to have gravy on his potatoes. (He is NOT an adventurous eater. He doesn't really LOOK like me, either. Hmmmm...)

This was one of the closest restaurants to my old place in Hyde Park, and was always my weekend breakfast go-to. The French toast, made unbelievably fast by the guys in the back, always hit the spot. Probably second only to White Palace Grill for my favorite South Side French toast.

But I guess I can't complain now, living two blocks from Svea, a 10-minute bus ride from Tre Kronor, and a 10-minute drive from the Wilmette Walker Brothers.
