I'm organizing a Bears game watch this weekend and need some help. I'm just going to do takeout from somewhere and either want BBQ or carnitas. I'm set on the BBQ places, but I need some suggestions on some carnita places. I've always heard that there are places in Pilsen that you can go to in the morning and takeout heaping mounds of pork carnita meat by the pound. I just do not know what these places are. Anyone know of or been to any places like this? Help me out, please.

I had some mighty good luck with Carniceria Guanajuato on Ashland in between North and Division. It's a large grocery with an enclosed taco stand and a massive butcher counter. I bought a ton of carnitas, carne asada and pollo for a gathering, and they were very helpful about making sure I had all of the appropriate accountrements for home taco assembly. I believe they have a few locations throughout the city. But there are plenty on this board who have MUCH more experience with this than I do, so I'd go with their recommendations before mine :-)

Try Carnitas Uruapan, I believe they have what you're looking for. Not sure if they're open on Sundays though.

Carnitas Uruapan, just mentioned, is a good place...

    So too Don Pedro's...

If you go to one of those, you can stop by Casa del Pueblo grocery on Blue Island immediately south of 18th to pick up other items that would accompany the carnitas well.

Either Carnitas Uruapan or Carnitas Don Pedro (further east on 18th at Carpenter) would have what you need and I'm sure they are both open on Sunday. It's probably easier to park by Uruapan.

Some pictures of both places are in the following thread:

Here's a write up by Antonius of Carnitas Uruapan:

    and one on Don Pedro:

By the way, if you think your guests would appreciate a selection of organ meat, pig ears, pig skin etc, you can ask for "surtido". If you want just lean meat, specify "maciza". :)

    Buen provecho,
    Amata

EDIT: I see Antonius beat me to it! :)

I have always enjoyed the Carnitas at Carnecerias/SuperMercado Jimenez -3840 West on Fullerton (@ Avers St.)- about $4.00 lb.- The Meat counter is in the back of the store- The Carnita Counter to the far left/near the Pollo Rostizado (Rotissere Chicken's for 4 bucks)........also in Bucktown, the SuperMercado called Danny's (formerly a Jimenez!) 2200 N. Western- they have a self serve Carnitas case, you fill your own paper "boat"- so if you like the leaner? Carnitas- you can pick-yer-own!

Fried Pork, Pico de Gallo/Tortillas & da' Bears...can there be a better combo?
