Every January we go to Florida to visit the
snowbirds. Last year while in downtown Delray Beach for the first time ever, I spotted what looked like an old drive-in. No one knew anything about it and we didn't have time to check it out. This year, petit pois and I made sure that it was on our itinerary. So, as soon as we landed, it was time for lunch and we dragged my in-laws to Doc's.
Doc's looks like a great place. It has all the trappings of a great, old burger stand: The retro sign with appropriate "since 1951" on it, the line of people, the huge shakes, and the hand-patted burgers:
Maybe it was the year of build-up in my head, but Doc's burger didn't nearly live up to the surroudings. Quite often, a great burger is more than the sum of its parts. Cheap meat and cheese on a fresh, simple bun, correctly handled can be lifted to new heights. Doc's seemed like less than the sum of it's parts. A lot of good ingredients that were underseasoned and just not very tasty.
Fries and onion rings (while clearly previously frozen) weren't too bad. Especially when dipped in their excellent grainy mustard.
Doc's is a cool-looking place, but next time I'll skip the burger and go for the ice cream.
Best,
Michael
